The festival that Springfield shares with a sister city from Japan is back. Covid lock down over. The place looks wonderful. Plenty of things to see for $12 admission. they offered several things to do for modest extra pricing. Even with a lot of people for event it was peaceful to stroll and enjoy a Japanese garden with pond, fish and plants.

Absolutely stunning, relaxing and beautiful place to walk around and explore.
We began our trip in the botanical gardens and wound our way over to the Japanese garden.
The whole area is gorgeous. Unfortunately a rain shower threatened our afternoon, so we left after a few hours of exploring.

The Gardens themselves were very well done. Definitely visit them if you enjoy peace and harmony. The only problem was the entrance. I asked the lady if there were any senior or military discounts and she said no. After paying and turning away to enter the gardens she said quite clearly to another lady in the booth "I don't know why some people have to be so dam* cheap". This put a cloud over my enjoyment of the place. Uncalled for. As a senior and retired military, I always ask for available discounts and have never been made to feel "cheap" in doing so.

Visiting locals, they'd never been...it was a reasonable $4 - it couldn't have been a more perfect day, sunny with a slight breeze. There are tons of places to picnic and kids to play. There were some small maintenance/construction things going on but not a hindrance to see the beauty. We highly recommend this for all ages.

We visited here on Dec. 31 to see the “Gardens Aglow” lights display. It was very nice, and we were so glad to catch it while driving home to PA after a week’s stay in OKC. This event did not require timed tickets nor masks. There was plentiful free parking upon our arrival, and rest rooms were available at the entrance. Food trucks selling beverages, donuts, and egg rolls were there—great for a quick bite to eat. (We would suggest that they move a few of their picnic tables from near the restroom area over to where the food trucks are.) The paths through the displays were easy to traverse, since it was not busy during our time there. The grounds were pretty, but there were many good-sized garden trees that had no lights on them, making many dark spots along the walkways. All in all, though, it was a very nice display. We plan to return to the garden some year to visit in nicer weather, since I love Asian gardens.

Since the botanical garden is free and beautiful it is worthwhile to spend $4 to visit this section. I got a coupon for $1 off so it was only $6 for the two of us. It was gorgeous and very peaceful, except for the mowers...but they have to keep it up so I'm not going to complain about that.

Not if you are just taking personal photos or pictures of your family. They do charge if you are working as a professional photographer taking photos of someone who is paying you.

When do cherry trees normally bloom?
Katie S
Springfield, MO
The date has varied every year for the past 10 years... Generally the Yoshinos and Higan Weeping forms bloom the first week of April and the double pom Kwanzans bloom the 2nd-3rd week of April. The blooms have come and gone as early as March 15, but this year, I suspect the best color will occur after April 15. The Kwanzan and Dogwood blooms are still pretty tight and I hope have not been damaged by recent freezes. Depending on the weather, I think April 20 - May 13 should be the best time to catch some spring color.

I see the hours posted are currently closed Wednesdays. Is that seasonal and may be different in October? We are traveling through on a Wednesday and would love to stop and see! Thanks!

Is there a fee for taking pictures?
Katie S
Springfield, MO
Professional Photographers who use the garden as a set and charge customers a fee are required to carry a photo pass. $25/Daily or $150/seasonal passes can be purchased at the Botanical Center. If you are just taking pictures for fun, enjoy!

When are the gardens the most beautiful, Spring or Summer?
Katie S
Springfield, MO
The Japanese Garden is only 7.5 acres of the 114 acre park. This attraction is very pretty in April - May with Cherries, dogwoods, azaleas and spring blooms. It also has nice water features that are great in summer and fall foliage. The entire park is best April-May and September.
