Couldn't imagine this hill would be high enough to have helped the Lewis and Clark expedition but a short walk up the hill changed my mind! What a view! Worth the short drive from downtown.

I was staying in Dillon for several days and went to visit the lookout. I can imagine this being a great place for a family with smaller kids to stop on a longer trip. There is a very short loop trail and some good interpretive signs. There is a bathroom as well. It could be a good spot for a picnic. When the skies are not clouded with smoke from wildfires I imagine that the views are pretty good, too.

This should be a must place to stop and review American History. It is easy to find and informative.

If you're a Lewis & Clark fan this place is great. The day we went we were the only people there. Be sure and stop by Beaverhead Rock; about 20 miles north of Clarks Lookout.

This well documented and clearly presented historical site provides an opportunity to take a very informative 15--30 minute jaunt from one's vehicle to stand in a place on a rocky hilltop exactly where William Clark stood on August 13, 1805, when he took 3 compass readings of three distant landmarks. No other location could yield exactly these three compass readings, hence it is absolutely certain that Clark's Lookout is the place where he stood on that day. It's an easy uphill climb on a paved "trail' to the top, where one can stand beside a large, ground level slab of marble into which a compass face has been engraved, and which shows the compass directions of each of the three compass readings. Great history lesson.

We spent an hour doing the short hike up the hill and then just enjoying the views and climbing around. Follow the signs through Dillon to find it.

Just because it was difficult to find, we felt we had achieved something just getting here! It's small but does achieve a sense of history and the views are great. I doubt it will ever be crowded and that is part of its charm.

A good place to orient Lewis & Clark fans. The view from the top is worth the 5 to 10 minute side trip.

I was there today. Dillon has two exits from the interstate, north exit and south exit. The south exit into town is near a new small shopping mall. The north exit to town has two very nice lodgings and a large, vacant wooden building. The lookout road is next to the interstate ramp in the northwestern part of town. There is a self service pay slot, but no envelopes or mention of price of use. Allow about 20 minutes, including drive time from the Safeway grocery store AND hiking out and back. There were about eight big turkey vultures standing around and circling above the tan lookout rocks. The actual ''beaverhead'' limestone is only a handful of miles northeast.
