Stop at the site with the only permanent record of the greatest journey in American history. See William Clark's name and date carved in this beautiful bluff overlooking the Yellowstone River. Bill, you came a long way from St. Louie.

We were in Billings and heard about this place, about 28 miles to the northeast. I was not too enthusiastic about driving out to see Captain William Clark's signature from 1806 he carved in a rock on the return trip of the Lewis and Clark...More

Pompey's Pillar is a hidden gem, which is nice in that it is not too crowded. A nice visitor center with exhibits and an exhibition on animals from Montana is nice. Aside from the historic significance of William Clark's signature, the view of the Yellowstone...More

A great sport for history buffs that like to walk in the footsteps of historical icons such as Clark. The sign next to the signature said, as one of the only physical evidences left of their exhibition that you know that was for sure where...More

We pulled off the freeway, ate lunch from our cooler, and went for a little walk into the interpretive center and up Pompeys Pillar. It's a short and easy walk to where we saw the famous carving in the stone "W Clark July 25, 1806"...More

Physical evidence of the great L & C journey. There is an entrance fee and maybe not all that much to see. On the other hand, it's a very historical site with a nice visitor center and a few short hikes. The view from the...More

This was a delightful stop on our travels across Montana following Lewis and Clark. The displays were very interesting as was the movie shown. We climbed to the top of the pillar to see Clark's signature and the fantastic view, and heard an excellent presentation...More
