The Nevada Northern Railway is a non-profit historical foundation whose mission is to maintain and operate what has been acclaimed as the best preserved railroad facility in the United States.

Come, enjoy history with us! We offer 90 minute train rides up toward the historic Ruth Copper Mine, as well as a view into the history of what put this mining town on the map. Don't miss the included tour of the Engine House and yard after the train ride. You can see the facility that has been servicing these steam locomotives for over a century now.

For the serious rail fan, we offer the opportunity to be at the throttle (and brakes!) Of a real, standard-gauge, steam locomotive on your own private run "up the hill."

Nice museum. Smaller than we imagined from the write ups we had read. The best part is being able to go anywhere you want on the property. Lots of neat old antique equipment and buildings to look at. Very good tour. All people who we talked too who work here seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. The train ride was nice... More

Gave the Mrs. The Be An Engineer STEAM as a Christmas gift. Went to Ely the weekend of May 20th, for her experience. Toured yard and engine shop. Met Mark the Director and chatted. On Saturday arrived and got her test graded and briefing so that I could ride along and video the trip. Met our Engineer and Fireman and... More

This is our second visit to the museum. We took the steam engine ride and throughly enjoyed the views of the mountain side and heard the narration of the mining history in Ely. The staff are all very knowledgeable and enjoyable to talk with. Train enthusiast can spend hours here and "one can can even be the engineer."

Years ago during my first journey to Ely, the railroad was still in use and posted to "Keep Out!". Today, those signs are a distant memory and one can follow his nose to see nearly the entire complex which is stuck in time to the start of the 20th century but features the great, industrial and brute-force tech of the... We had no idea this working museum existed when we pulled into town. What a surprise. This working steam railyard would be of interested to people who know nothing about railroads to die-hard railroad enthusiasts. Take the time to see the sights of the rail yard and enjoy a train ride up the canyon.

We were blown away by how good this train ride/ tour/ museum was. Everything about it was fantastic. Eric was extremely knowledgeable as a tour guide, never missing a beat with any question we threw at him. We'll definitely be back!

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is a museum that doesn't just teach you about the railway with objects in cases and museum tours, but going through the actual Train! You can take a trip to a few places, while narrators tell you what is going on. It's nice to look out, and see history right in front of you! I... More

We did the ride and guided tour of the shops and throughly enjoyed the experience! This RR stopped serving passengers in 1941, and the mining industry a few decades later. The tour of the shops were amazing. They contained antique engines and every conceivable machine and tool for running the RR. The shops are like they are frozen in time.... More

We stayed in the bunkhouse for two nights. Very clean, warm ( we stayed when it snowed), had a really great time ! ! My husband got to engineer the train in the morning, then passenger cars were added in the afternoon and we got to ride on it. Was a wonderful experience. The gift shop and museum were very... More

We had a marvelous tour of the railway museum, led by a terrific raconteur, Sean Pitts, of the museum staff. We had the option of self-guided or guided, and we were so glad that we chose the latter. The railway museum is like a picture in time. Stacks of office supplies fill one room where the staff left, certain that... More
