Once you reach the very top of the mountain and travel into the wooded area. Continue to look down in the dirt, because you could have garnet in front of you. I found several around the picnic area I was very surprised about that because I was told you had to go down into the slop. The best time to... More

Bring a hammer and eye proactive gear. For a dirt road the road was maintained well. Steep at times and a little tight in some spots. Lots of picnic areas. Bring a hammer. You have to carefully wack the rocks. I found 3 or 4 right away. However my loving and helpful husbsnd kind smashed a couple. Its best to... More

Took the dirt road as described and stopped 1/2 way up. Plenty of rocks..but no garnets. Got to the top where there is a forest service bathroom and promptly found 6 within 15 feet of our car. We took hammers and had great fun making small rocks out of big ones. Yes, it is quite dusty - but really great... More

We were Ely 1 day and it was fairly close. Do not go expecting to find any we did not. We took hammer and smashed many rocks to find nothing. I'll admit I know nothing of rock hunting and this did not help.

Even though it was chilly and overcast, we decided to venture out and try our luck aat prospecting for semi-precious stones while in Ely, Nevada. Our trusty Google map led us to the dirt road off of Hwy 50, the loneliest road in the USA. We did see evidence of human visitations but no cars or hikers while we drove... More

Wow! I haven't had this much fun since...I felt like I was a kid again, digging in the dirt and feeling fortunate to uncover my first garnet. Warning, however, garnet hunting can become addictive! After finding my first garnet I was hooked. Two hours later I called it a day and left with a bag full of at least 20... More

To prepare for the trip, I recommend taking a hammer (we had a small ball peen hammer we bought at the local hardware store) and maybe a trowel for digging. Water is a good idea too. You also need eye protection since hammering rocks sends shards flying. Head west on Hwy 50 and 5 miles from the Hotel Nevada you... More

Fun. I found 3 garnets in less than an hour. The ride up on a dirt road seemed long. Not too many people. Would go again with a hammer to break the rocks there. By the way onstar has no clue where this is

Garnet Hill is easy to get to and has a beautiful view. It is a good idea to bring at least one water bottle with you. A rock hammer is helpful but not required. Read the sign off the parking lot so you understand for what you are looking. The garnets are small, 1/4-1/2 inch in diameter, but look for... More

If you like rockhounding then you will love Garnet Hill. The garnets are small and of poor quality but are numerous and quite easy to find. When you arrive in the parking lot you are literally in the middle of them but if you want to really find some walk downhill a distance, remember that hundreds of people have already... More
