This historic estate was originally part of the great La Provence farm

given to French Huguenot farmers in 1694. Over the years the property was divided and the portion which is now Rickety Bridge was granted to Paulina De Villiers,

one of the first female land owners in South Africa, in 1797.

In the late 1980's the estate became known as Rickety Bridge due

to the old railway sleeper bridge which crossed the Franschhoek River

and provided the entry point to the estate. The rickety bridge was replaced in 1996 and the new bridge provides a safe crossing over the river.

Today, Rickety Bridge is a stately Franschhoek winery which has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the memory and pioneering spirit of Paulina De Villiers is celebrated by the flagship range of wines, Paulina's Reserve. These distinctive wines, as well as the renowned Rickety Bridge classic range and the Foundation Stone Range, have received many accolades and high praise in recent years.

Busy and Commercial, but Fun!

In high season this is a swarming with tourists in their coach load. But if that doesn't bother you the wine tasting is well organised and they have good wines.

Always worth going to Franschoek and this is a lovely winery. Slight disappointment that they only had white wines available for tasting. Ordered a few bottles as they were very good. worth the visit

Reception was fantastic and the waiters with attentive. We had the tasting portion number 3. Three wines paired with three dishes. Food was fantastic and was the wine. Started with prawn curry. Over to pork belly. Ended with a beef stew.

We visited Rickety Bridge as part of the very good wine tram tour. It was great fun to arrive by the tram, and then get the tractor up to the restaurant/wine tasting area. We had lunch at the restaurant. A very varied menu, with lots of options to eat a lot, or not so much. We had the tasting menu... More

We arrived here very late in the evening not long before closing looking to complete wine tasting. It was fantastic and our wine expert was amazing and very sound. I was hugely impressed with him. The wines did not blow me away but the experience there and person (whose name I cannot remember maybe jp) just made it all very... More

We went to Rickety Bridge via the Franschhoek wine tram. Rickety Bridge was our second last stop and the best of all of them! Our waiter JP was great, he served us with enthusiasm and great knowledge of all their wines. We are definitely going back!

This winery was very busy for tastings, due partly no doubt to the wine tram. However, the service was still good, the views nice and the wine very good.

Enjoyed a latish lunch on a beautiful day when the main rush was over. As ever, the food was delicious and accompanied by perfectly matched Rickety Bridge wines. The menu provides a multiple choice of small and large portions according to each diners appetite. There is something on the menu for everyone. The view is lovely and the service is... More

I have been to Ricket Bridge a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting experience and restaurant. However, this weekend I went with my son and there was only a verbal menu for the kids - then they didn't have what they were meant to have so they improvised and provided a very adult dish which was overwhelming...
