The drive there alone leaves you with the question of why live in such a remote area? The answer is simple enough if you consider that there was no interstate system and less inhabitants then. The area is simply awesome. We've been to walnut canyon, wupatki, honanki, Palatki, tuzigoot and Casa Grande and will travel to others. The hike is... More

We arrived at Silver City rather later than we had anticipated. I knew it was a bit of a drive from Silver City to the Dwellings. But I didn't know how long or how slow. At the beginning of the road to the Dwellings just outside of Silver City, there's a sign that states 42 miles to the Dwellings, slow... More

18 flights of irregular stone/dirt/gravel steps. Absolutely not handicapped accessible and not really accessible for the out-of-shape!!! Top of the cave area has paths that may be slanted or on the edge of the cliff and 18" wide. Absolutely not for the faint of heart but an impressive archaeological site if you are absolutely positive you can make it! The... More

We made a last minute decision during our road trip to visit the cliff dwellings. It was a fantastic afternoon. We spent about two hours there, this included a bit of time at the info center, as well as hiking up and exploring the dwellings. There are guides at the trailhead with great tips and advice regarding route choice and... More

I'm a solo traveler but a family of 4- Dad, Mom and 2 girls were in most of my photos. Thus Family Friendly. A rare opportunity to visit the actual dwellings circa 1200 where people of the Mogollon Culture lived with their families in the cliffs. Helpful Volunteer Park Rangers provided information about the culture and welcomed questions. You should... More

First, take all the travel advice and warnings seriously as this is a pretty remote place that takes a long time to get to. But that can be half the fun. From the trailhead on the Gila River it is about a one-mile hike up the dwellings themselves. They are not as elaborate as some other places like Mesa Verde,... More

It was a cold day but the sun was shining as we hiked up and down the mountain to see the Cliff Dwellings. You can actually enter the dwellings. Fascinating that people survived in these dwellings back in the year 1300. There are interpretive guides to give you detailed information about their history.

Made this stop on a long journey. It was great to get out of the car and see the cliff dwellings. Hike was a bit strenuous and a bit nerve racking at times coming down. My daughter discovered the junior ranger program here and has become a collector.

My wife and I stay in Silver City NM in a AirBnb. This was March 7. We woke up and had breakfast and went to Diane's Bakery to pick up sandwiches for our lunch. We wanted the freedom to be able to stop when ever/where ever we wanted to have lunch as we traveled to Gila Cliff Dwellings. We took... More

Beautiful Drive to monument. Make sure you have gas and things to drink as there's little on the way. Nice hike, if it's warm weather make sure you go early As it will be hot. There were benches to stop along the way, pace yourself and have water, the 3 year old And 11 year old had no problem with... More
