This park is a wonderful place for a day trip. Many things to do in a walkable distance. Beautiful scenery and clean facilities

Sometimes unplanned adventures are the most memorable. This was the case for us when visiting Bear Mountain. Arrived on a Friday around 10 and the lot was half full but was completely full when we left around 1:30, so get here early on weekends. We took the Major trail up to the fire tower and then back down the AT. The first half was where things went wrong and we ended up terribly lost with several others. Eventually we all just kind of picked a different direction (we chose straight up) and somehow everyone made it to the top. This was very strenuous but would be rated moderate if we would have stayed on the trail. Beautiful views at the summit but very busy. Coming down the AT side there were many people attempting to climb up all 800 stairs from Hessian lake to the tower. The vending machine at the top ate my only $5 bill but that was the only downside to this place.

Bear Mountain State Park is a lovely place with lots to see and do. The weekends get too crowded, but weekdays aren't bad. The Trailside Museum and Zoo is nice place to visit. Paddleboats at the lake are nice, but be warned that you have to wear a lifejacket and they absolutely reek of body odor to the point it is difficult to enjoy the time on the water, and it didn't look like they are disinfected in any way between users (during the pandemic...)

A great place to enjoy the outdoors only 1 1/2 hours away from Brooklyn. We stayed the the Bear Mountain Stone Lodge and the room was nicely decorated and clean. The 3.9 mile Perkins Memorial Tower Trail was a bit challenging but a great hike!

It's such a great place! I really enjoyed , it is peaceful, great to spend the day admiring the view, walking trough and visit the museum. It's a little dangerous to drive to get there because of the route 9N but also very excited, take the chance! But pay really good attention, because it's really narrow and they go from both sides, and to park, can be almost impossible.

With weekend crowds from NYC that throngs this park, it could be difficult to find parking. The place is too crowded at times. Scenery ok. It is just that the parking spaces could be difficult to find.

I stayed at Camp Homeward Bound in Bear Mountain, Upstate New York. What a beautiful place. Full of wildlife including deer & chipmunks. Tall lush green trees, many vast lakes and generally a gorgeous natural area to have lived temporarily.
Whenever I'm in the states again, I will be paying Bear Mountain another visit.

This is an amazing place, love hiking and being surrounded by nature. Whenever I can I go to explore nature and Bear Mountain is a magic place to be, even I enjoy being there by myself or friends and family

Large, beautiful park which can be quite crowded on weekends (and traffic a mess).
We visited during the week and almost had the park to ourselves.
Park contains a zoo (see separate review), swimming pool and carousel (which was not operating on the day we were there).

Senior drivers avoid the park fee during the week.

My wife and I along with our son hiked up the trail to the Perkins Tower on the summit of Bear Mountain this Fall and it was a truly meaningful experience. We have visited the Lodge and the grounds around Hessian Lake many many times, but this hike to the top is a trip you must take if you can physically handle it. It can be very strenuous so make sure your doc says it is ok for you! We took the steep and challenging route up the north side which involves some memorable and leg-straining climbs. This trail is just off the Hessian Lake paved path and quickly becomes a steep trail. Wear good hiking shoes! Great views as you ascend, so take your time and take deep breaths.
