Interesting island with a rich history going back to the revolutionary war — includes stories of spies, gambling, and prostitution. Bannerman an arms dealer later purchased the island in 1900 because his Brooklyn storeroom of gunpowder and ammunition was becoming too dangerous for the city — creating this Scottish-style castle as a warehouse on the Hudson River. In 1920, 200 pounds of shells and powder exploded in the castle, destroying a portion of the complex.

The boat ride from Beacon was pleasant. It was a nice summer activity on the water, walking the ruins, and learning about the island's history. It’s worth a trip with family and friends.

On a whim, I decided to make a trip to see this Castle after reading about it from an email newsletter. I am very happy that I did. The day was crisp, sunny, and cloudy, which made for some spectacular photos. The 25min boat ride over was just as interesting as the castle tour, being filled with the guide offering history tidbits about the area. The approach to Bannerman Castle is impressive and the steps up from the boat to the 'top' of the island were not horrible at all. My group's tour guide, Mary, was excellent. She was not boring, and it didn't appear to me as if she were 'on-script' at any time. She was also concerned about leaving enough time for us to explore the island on our own, while gently reminding us about staying on the marked trails. While I understand the need for turnover to get as many people to see this small wonder, I really wish I'd had more time to take everything in. Having said that, though, I'd unequivocally recommend Bannerman as an adventure for a day.

This is a great day trip from NYC, especially in autumn with all the leaves turning. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable and, once the tour is over, let you explore the island. The boat staff are also great fun and tell interesting anecdotes on the way over. I highly recommend.

This was a scenic and relaxing afternoon visiting a very interesting historical site. The tour guides were knowledgeable and informative. The island grounds provided awesome views of the castle and the Hudson River. The gardens were gorgeous. The boat was easy to access with parking in the adjoining commuter lot. The excursion left on time and was punctual to the island and back.

Beautiful day on the Hudson River and a very interesting, historical tour of Bannerman Island. I highly recommend this. The boat ride was relaxing and beautiful. The captain took us on the south side of the island on the way back which was an added bonus. Wes was a wonderful tour guide with a wealth of knowledge on the history of this island. I would go again in a minute!

Great little adventure which combines a boat ride on the Hudson, a step back in history and a fun little jaunt around a small island with lovely gardens. It's a step back in time, very serene and picturesque.

What a beautiful way to spend a lovely Sunday afternoon. Leisurely boat ride on the Hudson with historical commentary. The arsenal is now just a facade and the small "castle" is in disrepair, but the history of the island and the man who created the buildings there is fascinating. Our tour guide, Adam, was articulate, funny, and full of facts. Tour was well-balanced with boat ride, guided visit, and free time. Wear sneakers as terrain is rocky and tree roots are exposed. Also, there are 72 steps to climb from boat to island tour. Bathrooms were clean. I'd like to return for a night concert or movie on the island. A very leisurely way to spend the day. Beacon is close by and a wonderful little city to walk, visit art galleries, and have a bite to eat. I recommend this tour.

Great day! Boat ride to the island with a fabulous crew and great narration on the way. The guides on the island were very knowledgeable and the views fantastic. I recommend this for couples, families with teens and a trip with friends. A great day overall and worth the trip. Save some time at the beginning or end of the day for a visit to Main Street in Beacon NY. Plenty of shops and places to eat.
