We stopped a day before opening as we were passing through the area. We came upon Lighthouse Dave. He was so kind and friendly and full of historical knowledge about the lighthouse and grounds and even though they weren’t open he gave us a tour. The grounds. are beautiful. There really is something for everyone at Dunkirk. The veterans museum has a large collection of military and maritime artifacts. Very interesting. I would recommend this tour to everyone. Thanks again Dave. So nice meeting you!

My husband and I got to the lighthouse a little late. It was a very cold, rainy, windy day, but I didn't mind. I really wanted to see this lighthouse. We could have been turned away, but instead we were granted what turned out to be a private tour, as we were the only visitors. As Dave began the tour, I knew immediately I liked him. He was kind, personable, extremely knowledgable. We could talk and joke with him as if we had known him our whole lives.
He and his wife were getting ready to close and could have sent us away. That he happily gave us this tour, and the time he took showed how much he loved the job.
I have never had a better tour anywhere. We had come from Ohio and this lighthouse was the thing I wanted to do most. It was so well worth it, and made our little getaway, as we were heading home the next day. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for a wonderful time.

This was a very interesting stop. Indias was a great tour guide. Love all the veteran and local connections to past workers. So glad we stopped.

We were spending a couple of days in the area, and decided to stop at the Dunkirk Lighthouse (which we had found on a list of good places to visit). As lighthouses go, there appeared to be nothing particularly special about it, but we decided to take the tour of the lighthouse and museum, anyway. There being no other guests at the time, we had a private tour by a most friendly docent, who shared a wealth of history about the lighthouse itself, as well as the local area and Lake Erie. While that was most interesting, and a climb to the top of the light tower, itself, was most enjoyable, the real gem of this facility is the small, but excellent collection of military memorabilia, representing all four branches of the service. Definitely worth a trip to Dunkirk, and the modest cost of the tour.

I arrived on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, just at the last hour to take the guided tour. My guide was Jim Arnold, He is the grandson of Francis Arnold, who was attached to this lighthouse site from 1909 to 1950 in some capacity, including lighthouse keeper.
The notes that I took were misplaced , by me, somewhere along the line, so I hope my memory of these events are not too far off while writing this memo.
This is one of the best lighthouse keepers house I have seen, The home artifacts are beautiful, the inside construction, furnishings, tableware, cabinetry. Some of the nicest stuff.
My tour guide, Jim, knows a lot about the history and genealogy here.
If you want to take a tour, go inside the buildings or climb the tower, you need to pay for the guided tour. More than fair. To just walk around the grounds I think is free.
I took some pics that I will attempt to attach to this memo.

Not the most impressive setting (there is a giant electric plant that is nearby) or largest lighthouse (tower is about three stories tall) but worth seeing if you are a lighthouse lover and you do get a nice view of Lake Erie.
First floor of lighthouse is nicely restored with period furniture and appliances. Second floor is more like a military museum, which is unusual for an historic lighthouse. Guide did a good job keeping the tour moving and touring the house, getting us up the stairs to the tower, and back down in less than 30 minutes.
Stairs to the top can be a little treacherous at the top and they could use hand rails on both sides. Nice touch was offering a family rate for touring the lighthouse at $25/family. Very friendly guides and staff at the lighthouse.

We had a great time visiting the lighthouse and the museum while traveling along Lake Erie. Dave was a great tour guide and very passionate about the light house. The lady working in the gift shop was very friendly and brightened our day!

We stopped by the lighthouse on a whim, but were thrilled to meet tour guides like Jim who loved what they do. The tour was amazing, and the main house is full of interesting military artifacts.
