We’ve eaten here before when walking the Pennine Way and it was a really nice pub in a great location
Unfortunately when I visited yesterday whilst on the C2C cycle ride it was closed down. I was told it’s been sold and will reopen in July 2019. I hope so

It's closed!! Seems to have closed quite a few times over the last few years. Hope someone takes it on soon. So sad.

I'm stopping in Garrigill in a couple of weeks time and my landlord has just told me the pub is closed - there are some bids in but it may be while before it re-opens.
Its a pity because it was a good pub.

8 of us stayed Friday & Saturday night in the Village Hall and spent both nights in the George & Dragon Good beer, great food & a really warm welcome from mine hosts Dave & Jackie.

We had the guitars out both nights and had a great singsong with the locals who were really welcoming, can't wait to go back :)

We took a short walk in here as we were staying in a cottage nearby. It was between Christmas and New Year, so they only had a limited menu available - scampi, sausages or all day breakfast. What we had was good though. The pub was quite busy despite the time of year.

This wonderful pub has been open and shut for many years but now has been fully open for a year now, and how welcome that is. It is exactly how a North Pennine, and indeed any north country pub should be. Stone flag floors, roaring fires at each end. A sparkling pint of Black sheep, a limited range of excellent beers so they are always just right from a perfectly kept cellar.

A limited (as it should be for home cooked food, no ping ping meals here!), basic menu. Today we had between us the tastiest, hearty pea and ham soup ( a misnomer as it had lots of other lovely stuff in there ) which would have warmed up the coldest and wettest of hikers and cyclists. My partner had just cheesy chips with gravy but was offered a plate of extra cheese and a pot of Parmesan, and we had a great chat with the chef.

There was a family environment there with children, local residents and incomers, all being made welcome by the hosts who originate from the village. We are from a couple of valleys away and would have loved to have used the pub before but we never knew when it would be open and what it would be like. But now we know, and don’t intend to be strangers.

Called in today for a couple of pints after a pleasant walk in the South Tyne valley. Really nice centuries old pub with a great ambience. Beer was spot on and landlord very welcoming. Very pleased we stopped by.

We did ring ahead to make sure - landlord very helpful - good selection of beer although I didn't have any mid cycle ride. Hearty food - I had soup followed by plum crumble (made from organic plums from landlord's mother in law's garden) - excellent!! Best of all was the roaring fire which allowed us to dry out our wet cycling clothes...

Earlier in the year my wife and I stopped in this pub after a walk in the area - it was a Sunday and we had a beer here. Talking to the really friendly landlord I asked him if they were open for lunch durin the week as I was going to pass through here with 11 others doing the C2C cycle route. Normally no was the answer, but give us a bell, and I'll open up for you.I did, and earlier this month 8 wet and tired riders and their 4 support dropped in for beer and food.
The landlord didn't let us down, a great food menu was enjoyed by everybody, as well as well kept real ale and a hearty fire. I had a lasagne which was definitely above you usual mass produced microwave rubbish.
So good that you can phone a day or so before and have a place like this open up for you especially as there is little in the way of refreshment to be had in the area.
Well worth a visit.
