Visited in summer 2020, during my Shropshire vacation. The ruins are located in the down side of Shropshire hill, a bit of a hidden place, close to a few farms, but yet not easy to find, and it is quite small. Surrounded with fields, cattles grazing on neighbouring fields, very calm, quiet and relaxing place. Only 2-3 car can park in one time, but because it is never overcrowded, used to be enough. Please note, as it is free and small, there is no shop, cafe or toilet on site, but a few information plates are there to tell its history.

We visited Hopton castle because we were staying close by. It was a lovely place to visit. On our visit we were the only people there so having it to ourselves was a bonus, exploring it in our own time. Great information readily available for visitors.
I wouldn’t advise this as a day out as more of a call in on the way somewhere, as lovely as it is to see it doesn’t take long to see it all, but well worth calling in if your passing. We used maps on my iPhone and it took us straight there.

Very interesting Castle ruin with so much history and a fascinating story . There is an excellent programme on YouTube which was made by the Time Team called Massacre In the Cellar. Hopton Castle is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Walter de Hopton possibly built the stone castle during the Barons' War of the 1260s. The bailey was fortified in stone and a rectangular two-storey keep was built.
Nicely looked after with a small car park, free entry but it is good if everyone contributes somethink to keep it open.

Nice old ruined castle ideal for a quick visit if nearby. The upkeep relies on voluntary donations so spare a couple of £ to keep it going. Lovely and peaceful in a wide open space so ideal for kids and the dog too.

Well looked after and lots of information boards to help you understand what you are looking at. The castle has all its walls still standing and is more of a tower, than anything else. The carpark is a two minute walk away.

Do not follow Google Maps as it’s on the left way before maps tells you where it isn’t. When you see it then just keep a look out for a road and follow your nose. It’s really nice ruins but only small and a very quick visit. Some history and information to read and the views are amazing of nearby area. Worth going if nearby but if you love castles go to Ludlow. This place is free

We were passing by on the way to Clun Castle, we enjoy castles and we are English Heritage Members. On the approach you are greeted with a Keep, and earthworks. The Castle does not seem much, but what struck us immediately was the love and care the Trust has put into Hopton Castle.
The Castle was falling into decay, a Trust was formed to buy and save this beautiful ruin. The information boards tell the story in the Civil War, and how it became the ruin it is. We were very impressed with Hopton, and a castle worth preserving.
My congratulations to the Trust for saving it and preserving it. Worth a visit, and worth the respect Hopton Castle finally has.

I'd say it's worth going, even tho it's not very big you can at least go inside and look around and take some good pictures and you can walk all the way around the outside too.
