About
MANITOGA / The Russel Wright Design Center preserves, protects and shares Russel Wright's modernist House, Studio and Woodland Garden as a masterful integration of design and nature, a powerful example of land reclamation, and a resource for inspired design in daily living through public tours, programs and events. MANITOGA is a National Historic Landmark, an Affiliate Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and a World Monuments Watch Site. It is one of the few 20th century modern homes open to the public in New York State. Manitoga offers seasonal tours mid-May through mid-November, including various tours of the House, Studio, Woodland Garden, themed Guided Hikes in the Landscape, and Annual Performances each fall. Advance reservations required, tickets available online. Please note that most tours include a mandatory, moderate hike. Manitoga's 3+ miles of hiking trails are open to the public year-round during daylight hours, $5 suggested donation.

Manitoga is a hidden gem. I drove past hundreds of times without knowing what it is.
The experience reminded my of Frank Lloyd Wright and Falling Water, which I saw a few years ago. It is amazing, and the staff is great.

Manitoga is wonderful. Be sure to allow time to walk some of the paths. The woods are beautiful. Russell Wright’s house is unusual and very interesting. Highly recommend.

First of all, the walk and views are gorgeous. It's a fantastic site and we had a guide with an extensive knowledge of the Wright family and their place in American culture. I understood the landscaping, the pool, the designs and the house better because of this guide. He brought nearly everything we saw on the tour to one perspective on this important American artist: "Remember that Wright was trained as a set director."

This is a wonderful spot for those interested in architecture, design and nature. The 1 ½ hour tour is fascinating - though it requires a fair amount of climbing steep rocky steps. The house is designed to fit into the natural surroundings including a large quarry pool and waterfall (when it's running). You can hike the property for free but the tour is well worth the $30.

Although the website and trail maps say that there is “easy” trail, there was nothing easy about it. Climbing up means navigating stone stairs….meaning big stones placed in the hilly terrain… that have no railing, and then there is a log bridge that crosses a stream. If you have any kind of limited mobility or fear of falling, please think twice. I was quite disappointed that it felt so risky: the website should mention the stone stairs and potential difficulty. It had such promise!

Manitoga understands your concerns and we thank you for your input. We consult experts in determining trail difficulty and provide visitors the resources to make informed decisions. For example, we note on our website, visitor kiosk and our hand-held Trail Maps that the “Wickopee Trail includes a log bridge stream crossing.” It is widely considered an “easy” trail for its modest elevation and well-placed stone steps. We constantly strive to improve our visitor experience and will review our language for greater clarity. We regret that you did not have a positive experience.

It was an unplanned and unexpected encounter. Stuck in the area, we decided to book a visit based on reviews. How lucky we were! It is more than a tour; it is an out-of-time sensory experience. No inside, no outside, all is connected. We weren't familiar at all with Russel and Mary Wright's work. Thanks to the passion and knowledge of the guides, we discovered their universe,
Our visit was in June. I will return, no doubt, in another season.

We are thrilled that you had such a wonderful experience, and truly connected with the site! We take great pride in our Tour Staff, and couldn't be happier that they were able to engage you with Russel Wright's vision and work. We look forward to welcoming you back in other seasons, and highly recommend October (perhaps for a Sunset Tour, complete with wine, charcuterie and fabulous foliage). Autumn at Manitoga is truly magical!

Whether you are a mid-century architecture or a nature enthusiast, this is a great experience! I am a garden designer in WA state, and my daughter is an arts organization executive living in the Hudson Valley. We both love to visit great examples of garden design and architecture, and this visit was wonderful! Russel Wright masterfully immersed his amazing International Style adaptation house and studio into the woodland setting, which he created from a forlorn rock quarry! The tour was well narrated by a friendly and well-informed guide who gave just the right amount of time to experience, enjoy, and photograph each area of the grounds around the home, just as Wright envisioned. We highly recommend this tour!!

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review and helping spread the word about Manitoga! We are delighted that you and your daughter so enjoyed your tour, and how much you appreciated Russel Wright's vision. We hope to welcome you both back soon, perhaps for an Autumn Sunset Tour! The foliage is truly stunning in mid to late October (even more so with the lovely wine and charcuterie spread)!
