The Shirt Factory was built in 1902 for the McMullen-Leavens Company as a shirt factory, the building was expanded in 1910 as production increased. In the 1930's the product line expanded into dress manufacturing. The shirt and dresses produced here were high quality fashion featured on the pages of publications like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Production continued here through 1996 when the factory closed its doors.

In 1999 the current owner began a slow process of rehabilitating the building and breaking it up into rentable studio space. Over the years the space has grown and evolved. Visitors will find an eclectic mix of individuals calling the 70 plus studios here home, offering a wide range of goods, services, classes and more. The building is open daily 8am-5pm, individual studios set their own hours/availability, please check our website for studio hours. While here you will notice machines in the halls and dresses and shirts displayed in cases, these are from the original factory that operated here, for which the building is named.

The first floor is our "designated retail area" all studios on this floor are open on Thur-Sat from 12pm-5pm, many studios on the other floors are also open at this time, making these ideal days to visit the building!

The range offered by tenants is impressive! There is kung fu/martial arts/tai chi, yoga & zumba, loose leaf tea, baked goods, Himalayan salt lamps and Himalayan salt products, pottery, furniture, original artwork in a variety of forms and mediums, acupuncture, massage, vintage goods, a hair salon, yarn and fiber arts...You have to it experience to truly appreciate the variety.

For an experience unlike any other, visit the building during an open house, especially the two that occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The owner allows the tenants to invite outside vendors in to set up in the halls, it is an amazing opportunity not only to shop local, but to find unique one of a kind gifts for yourself and everyone else on your list!

On our website is a full directory with tenant descriptions, hours and contact information, as well as a calendar with upcoming events and classes to help you make the most of your visit!

The shirt factory is an eclectic mix of galleries and studios, in a historic factory, often staffed by artisans. You can find candles, quilts, Adirondack furniture, jewelry, etc, all crafted by locals. The best time to go is during their "open house" in May, because more of the artisans are actually there and open. Some just use it as studio... More

JT, Thank you for visiting us, we're excited to hear that you enjoyed the building! I'm guessing it's been a little while since you visited because we haven't had an open house in May for a couple of years, and we've expanded on the historical displays in the halls to include original sewing machines and garments. If you enjoyed the... More

Local artists and crafts people have turned an old shirt factory into a gallery of shops and studios that you shouldn't miss. Besides the many different mediums of the artists, there is a history of the building along with old photos of the factory from the early 20th century.

We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit and hope you will visit again soon. For a truly special experience, try to visit during one of the holiday open houses when we have all of this plus outside vendors set up in the halls, showing off their skills! More

This was an eclectic group of professionals and artisans in a cool old factory. On each floor, old photos of the shirts and fashions made there were displayed, as well as sewing machines. Although a bit out-of-the way for some travelers, it was well worth the (totally hot and humid day) visit. Everyone was quite nice. Some places have limited... More

I come here to walk through brick and plaster hallways, high ceilings, and a asymmetrical layout of stairways. I feel like a kid in a mystery house of many rooms of which even the doors are fascinating and the aura relaxing. I don't care if the shops have erratic hours or if the artists played hooky. The halls have exhibits... More

Arrived here at 2:30 pm on Friday - thought it was close enough to the weekend that artisans might be there. Sadly disappointed, as I read other reviews. Few studios were open - maybe 6 or 7. It is a great idea and great use of the space. The town of Glens Falls also looks like it would be nice... More

What a great find!! Dozens and Dozens of amazing artists, crafts, wood working, shops and more. Such a great use for an old building! This is a retired shirt and dress factory. There are photos of the 100's of people running sewing machines and original sewing machines dotting the interior of the building. What they had on display and available... More

Stopped here after finding it on Trip Advisor. Not much was open at 10am on a Thursday. Shops looked cute though. There were old sewing machines to look at and info to read about the shirt factory.
