You can view this falls which is very close to the parking area and take pictures from the lower area. You can then also walk up the easy path and steps to the higher area Falls Overlook to get a closer viewing. There is a...More

This park is just outside Ithaca. It has fantastic, steep gorge with several waterfalls and deeper pools. Very steep trails, but not long - about 1.5 mile loop. Small swimming pool below lower falls. We went there in the morning - it was empty and...More

We were visiting our daughter (little older than a teenager) in PA during her summer internship and was told about this park that was pet-friendly. I was expecting a small falls, but it was more than that...the further up the side of the falls you...More

The waterfall and swimming area is visible from the highway. The trail up along the falls is georgeous (and steep) and you get away from the crouds quickly. Beautiful park.

I had a short amount of time to spend in the park but enjoyed the Gorge Trail. I was there in early morning and pretty much had the park to myself. At the end of my hike many people were arriving. The falls are very...More

Both us and our dog loved this hike. We took the gorge trail up right next to the waterfalls (lots of stairs, but elevation change is how you get waterfalls!). Every step was worthwhile with the lovely views. When we got to the top of...More

Beautiful waterfalls and an amazing hike. A little strenuous, but well worth the beautiful scenery. Would highly recommend!

The first and most spectacular Fall is close to the parking lot and easy for children. In the summer you can swim but the hours are limited. To visit the next fall be prepared for many, many stairs. The walkway rims the gorge and it...More

You need to visit this park and walk the gorge trail. It is beautiful. Lots of fun splashing in the river. Lots of areas that are quiet for just hanging out. New York State is blessed with so many beautiful parks.

We live nearby, and Buttermilk is one of our favorites. It's a vast park with a lot of options for all people - hikers, runners, bikers, dog owners, and of course, waterfall and gorge lovers.

Watkins Glen was on our list but was closed at the time for trail renovation so can't say. Buttermilk was beautiful but I've been told the water flow is much less later in the summer.

I wouldn't recommend hiking the Buttermilk Trail for a 5 year old. The steps that run along the falls at the lower Buttermilk are steep, and there is no railing. There are other parks close by where a 5 year old can hike... More

If they are reasonably fit you can park at the lower level and hike to the upper, then go around the lake and back. With stops and not pushing it it'll be a good two hours. Bathrooms and water are at the mid point.
