Not a review, just a note that Slide Mountain is not in New Paltz. The address given is for the DOE Regional Office. Don't go there expecting to see a mountain!!!

Hike Slide or Giant Ledge for a "relaxing" day hike (5 mikes +/-1800 Feet elevation) with fabulous panoramic views. Or, venture farther, to Cornell and Wittenberg Mountains from Slide or to panther Mtn. from Giant Ledge, for a more strenuous hike.....with some more beautiful scenery. Lots of other trails and peaks to explore, plus some off-trail bushwhacking to remote peaks. I've hiked all over, including all the major Catskill peaks many times and this area keeps calling me back.

The Slide Mountain Wilderness, encompassing more than 47,500 acres, is the largest and most popular wilderness area in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Extensive foot trails provide access to the remote interior, often climbing over lofty peaks with spectacular views. Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in all of the Catskills, inspired poet and naturalist John Burroughs to write; "Here the works of man dwindle, in the heart of the southern Catskills." A plaque commemorating both the man and the mountain graces the face of the summit rock, in tribute to Burroughs and his vision.

I have hiked many of the trails in this park, most recently the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail
(1.6 miles, blue markers, moderate 900 feet elevation gain.) It was a glorious fall day, and we enjoyed each of the view points. This is often called the most scenic route to the top of Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in the Catskills.
