Rosendale Trestle is the star of this adventure, located between mile markers 15 and 16. If you are driving here, it is on Route 213 just west of the Rosendale "Business District". As the parking situation is confusing - when you see the trestle, find the first road that is North and West of it and go up the hill to get to the parking lot (called Binnewater Parking Area) which will be on your left. The New Paltz section starting just before mile marker 8 through mile marker 9 is the other recommended part - make sure to explore the shops, dining options and Historic Huguenot Street all of which are within a few blocks of the trail in this section. The trail is crushed rock and well maintained - always enjoyable for hiking

Love to ride my bike from downtown New Paltz to Rosendale, have a casual lunch walk around town then back.

Very pleasant, well maintained crushed rock trail. A valuable part of the Empire State Trail. New York values it's rail trails. It is clear.

This is one of the intersecting trails of the Empire State system that run through New Paltz , Mohonk Mountain Preserve and the surrounding Shawangunk mountains and runs along the river of the same name. Immaculately maintained, paved for 30 miles. Benches and restrooms were readily available on the area near the town of New Paltz. Also some excellent birding, even in slow bird August. Trail seems mostly used by bikers, but more than enough room for hikers as well. Ample parking at trailheads.

My friend and I walked the trestle in Rosendale which was very nice and has great views of Rosendale. Walk is very easy straight and flat. There is another path you can take which has a number of stone steps going up or down. Parking is right across the street.

I am giving this 4 stars primarily for the bucolic views of flowers, far off hills, the Gunks, farmland, apple orchards, the very short ride through the sweet, little town of Gardiner, but not for the trail itself (check out my pictures) I believe that it is best suited for mountain bikes & walkers because of its very rough, not particularly well-maintained surface. We started southward in New Paltz & for a short period, the trail is all loose & small stones & then becomes hard-packed dirt with both large & very sharp rocks & more smaller stones but with a stable feel to it, as long as you keep your eyes peeled on the jutting edges of those rocks. The width of the trail varies greatly from about ten feet wide down to maybe four inches wide. South of Gardiner, the trail is hardly maintained at all & this is where it narrows down to two side by side, super narrow, 5" wide tracks. Still, we enjoyed the challenge & the views.

The perfect way to spend an autumn day. New Paltz Biking was very professional and personable and it was so simple to get biking on the trail. I have hiked and climbed for decades around the Gunks, but this was the first time I rented bikes. It will not be the last.

Nice trail for walking, running or biking but it’s primarily bicycles. Trail is good enough to walk with sneakers. Note it is a dirt trail. Will go and hike it again. Safe enough for solo people with the amount of traffic is not to isolated. Good parking available to get to area and unload bikes for a fun day. Great restaurants to refuel after a good bike or hike.

The rail trail is a great stroll, especially during a winter snowfall. It is nice to get out and see nature and enjoy the beautiful views.

We rented bikes from Nee Paltz Bicycles, right at the trailhead. They recommended the newer hilly River to Ridge trail which had beautiful scenery but our rental time was almost up when we returned to the Wallkill Rail Trail. Only got to do a small part of it on bike but walked the Rosendale Trestle later that day. Spectacular!
