A vulcanic crater with very salty water - like the dead sea. It is impressive, how it looks. And it is very funn to float on the water. Try to avoid huge tourist groups. What is quite hard - because there not too much sight to visit on Sal island. We rented a car, and got there on our own.... More

A place which is the main reason my the island has the name Sal (salt). It was fun floating about the the water but it doesn't take long to get bored of it.

We stopped here on the day tour of Sal along with a lot of other coaches. There is not a lot so see until you go through the tunnel and then you have a vista like something out of early Dr. Who or Blakes 7. We didn't go for a swim but others did. It is impossible to sink. When... More

Although my girlfriend and I visited Sal principally for the sunshine, we were keen to get around to see a bit of the island and went on a day's tour organised by our hotel. The clear highlight of this was the trip to the Pedra Lume Salt Crater. The landscape across the salt mine is quite distinctive, and not what... More

I visited here last week and it was pretty interestimg. I enjoyed wandering around the salt flats first, observing the salt crystal formation before taking a dip months salt pool. It's certainly very salty and you probably don't wantvut in your eyes or mouth ! There were many people there at the time, but it's a big place. I didn't... More

The salt mine was a fantastic experience to be floating in the water unaided. Plenty of people around on tours. We took an independent tour and had to pay €5 to get in. There are toilet and changing facilities and also a cafe and small gift shop. The walk down was a bit steep not good for push chairs and... More

Our visit started by the coast where we saw the old salt-vessels and the ship-yards, now sadly derelict, and the old 'cable - car' system used to transport the salt to the ships. We then went to visit the crater which is amazing in that it is hidden away - from the outside there is nothing to see but inside... More

A real surprise to go through a gap in the rocks to suddenly see the crater full of white salt beds. What a shame the industry had ended, but at least they have tourists. I would have given 5 stars but for the lack of facilities - our guide told us there were about 1000 visitors a day - 2... More

if you havnt done a salt lake then do go. Its only 5 euros entrance. It is such a strange sensation and the semi industrial location in an extinct volcano makes it worthwhile. The facilities there are basic and as this is probably the most visited tourist place on the island, I do think for not much cost the lake... More

Went on island tour with Blinky's & enjoyed all including salt mine. Strange experience but very good & impossible to sink. Also salt very good for skin & helps heal any bites you may have. Pop along & see the lovely Welsh lady at Blinky's & she will help you with all you need & a reasonable price. We went... More
