The Virginia City Shortline Railroad was built by Charlie Bovey in 1964 to connect Virginia City, Montana to Nevada City - A mile and a half away. Today, the Virginia City Shortline is a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and learn about the surrounding area! The train ride is approximately 15 minutes long. Train tickets can be purchased from the Virginia City Train Depot, Nevada City Museum, or as part of the Family Pass from the River of Gold. All locations open at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased for the 10 am train at the Virginia City Depot the morning of departure. The train departs in Nevada City across the street from the Museum and Music Hall at the Bovey Visitor Center. The engineer will blow the whistle 5 minutes prior to departure. Train does not run in the rain or snow. Open Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day.

Fun ride between Virginia City and Nevada City. Note - the train whistle gets a bit loud after a while. The conductors give an enjoyable history talk all along the ride. Since there is no round house, for the train to turn around in, the...More

This train takes you about 10-15 minutes between Virginia City and Nevada City with a narrator giving some brief history and fun facts about the area. The workers are very friendly and great with children. It seems to fill up fast and since there is...More

. This was a nice way to get between these two ghost towns. As seniors we paid $8 each for the ride. You can ride ad many times as you want. Trains (there's only one) leave every half hour. The ride itself doesn't offer lots...More

Decent enough trip between Nevada City and Montana City. We were lucky to have the switch man answering questions for us about the area. I think children would really enjoy this. We were given the wrong time for our return train and just missed it,...More

This was such a wonderful experience for us. Virginia City and Nevada City (where the train takes you) were lovely authentic cowboy towns full of buildings, stores, shops, and eateries from the "olden" days. The 1 mile, round-trip rail ride was reasonably priced and historic...More

While staying in Virginia City, we took the Alder Gulch Railway to Nevada City to check things out there. It's a short ride, only 1.5 miles or so, and it takes about 25 minutes. As of this writing the steam locomotive is inoperative while the...More

This was our last stop before enduring the torture of Yellowstone. We enjoyed every minute we spent in both Nevada City and Virginia City. Unlike the Neanderthals in Yellowstone, the travelers in Wyoming were very civilized and friendly. Check out the 2 story outhouse.

You wouldn't think a little 2 mile (approx) train ride would be so fun, but it is. Getting a different view, relaxing, cool on a hot day, visiting with others.... It's just sweet. Can't wait to go again before summer is over!

It’s a tiny open air train that runs between Virginia City and Nevada City. We learned a little history of the area on the ride but were disappointed that the stories were the same both coming and going. It isn’t very scenic but it is...More
