After a splendid lunch in Beacon we trekked 16 miles up to Vassar College for a stunning afternoon of fine art from around the world. The collection is small by Louvre, BM or MMA standards, but as they say in Brooklyn: "it's cherse." From a stunning 18th Dynasty Egyptian sarcophagus to the finest in contemporary art, this Poughkeepsie treasure is... More

The works of art were fantastic. Picasso to ancient Chinese artifacts. Well thought out displays impressive amount of rare pieces. Only issue I had, there were 6 of us an elderly couple, my wife and myself, and my 13 year old and 8 year old. The security guard began following us immediately and told me. "There's no running here" sternly,... More

Quiet, clean with impressive permanent collection and fascinating war art exhibit - posters, coins, medals, etc. All this set on a breathtaking campus that made me long for college days.

The art center was designed by the famous architect Cesar Pelli, known for some of the grandest buildings in the world, but what I found more impressive was the collection housed inside. The paintings of the Hudson River School are justly renowned and here one has access to a number of the finest. The paintings alone could easily take you... More

Alas, some of the Lehman and Loeb (both formerly Wall Street investment banking names) money that went into the I.M. Pei redo of this museum building should have gone into expanding the collection. But maybe I was expecting too much. This is strictly a teaching museum, with fairly random examples of this and that. I went especially for what turned... More

Due to the fact that I live in the area I have been numerous times. I am not an aficionado of art but even a novice such as myself enjoyed looking at the art works that they have to offer and it is a great place to spend a little time. Also you can walk the grounds of the college... More

In a lovely building on the Vassar College campus, this museum has some excellent examples of art across time and geography. The usual blind spots (not enough women or non-European artists; most are white) but great stuff and also fine temporary exhibitions. Free, too.

We have been taking an annual fall journey to the Hudson Valley for about 15 years. So we are always looking for new sites to see. Vassar's Art Gallery is amazing! We specifically went to see the Heroes exhibit, but fount a vast amount of other artworks in this rambling gallery. A pleasant surprise. (Also visit the Shakespeare Garden on... More

It is a nice museum. Nice Francis Bacon. Nice Rothko. Nice Dubuffet. Nice Vuillard. Not a huge collection. The Hudson River works didn't knock my socks off. Definitely not a Yale collection but still unquestionably worth seeing. T
