Not only is there so much history behind this beautiful sanitary, but it is a preserve for the most beautiful plant and animal life Long Island has to offer.

A trip to Shelter Island is not complete without a visit to the Mashomack Preserve. Go there for an easy hike, to bird watch, or commune with nature.

We managed to squeeze in a couple of hours before getting the south ferry but wished we'd allowed more time to explore further. We did the red and yellow trails comfortable in the time we had. Lots of chipmunks about, and we saw a box...More

Marshlands, woods, pastures, glimpses of the sea: hike for a short while, a couple of hours, or for several hours (bring bug-spray and sun-screen) - this is a truly beautiful location.

A beautiful & pristine preserve that has miles of trails by the water and in the fields. I went in winter and it is just stunning.
