Inside the grounds of Fort Wadsworth sits Fort Tompkins, overlooking the harbor and Battery Weed underneath it. It's equal parts historic, architecturally stunning and creepy. We recently went to a special program there hosted by the Alice Austen House and it was s great venue.

I bring all out of town visitors to this park. You need your walking shoes to explore the grounds. We bought our lunch and ate at the highest point overlooking the city. We even saw the Queen Mary sailing from the NYC pier that day. It's a must see. We drove our car there it's free.

What a welcoming community. We found it very easy to get around walking and using the city bus system. The Navy Lodge serves the purpose well. Within walking distance to restaurants and bus stops all around. Clean community.

For history buffs, Ft. Wadsworth goes back to Revolutionary days. Battery Weed is especially cool For tourists, the views of the Verrazano Bridge, and the NYC skyline are beautiful. Look up the schedule for walking tours ... well worth your time and shoe leather. For casual walking around, your choices include historic structures, bird-watching, a stroll on the beach, and... Ft. Wadsworth is a great place to visit and walk about. Some of the most spectacular views of NY harbor are here. There is a small museum of interest and within a short walk you are at the overlook gazing on the harbor, the ships and bridges of NY. Parking is plentiful and there is even a camp ground with... There are great views and a lot of history, I have been to Fort Wadsworth several times and never has it been overly crowded which is really nice. It's a very peaceful and relaxing enviroment. I love to bring my guests from out of town to this spot and they always take the best pictures of the bridge. It's a... More

The Fort is an underappreciated resource on the island. During migration seasons in the Spring and Fall, there is EXCEPTIONAL BIRDING here near the beach. In the summer, there is a campground that caters to Europeans seeking to stay in NYC on a budget. Great views of NYC from under the bridge. A real find. There is Revolutionary War history... More
