Truly African experience out there and amazing beaches combined with few tourists wonderful seafood and happy people. The draw back is when travelling around you must be diligent with the police and army who often take bribes to allow you to pass through road blocks on your journey. When approached I would say we had limited funds but could arrange for the British Embassy to contact them and pay any fines or expenses as we were staying as guests of diplomats and UK government. Usually worked if all else fails talk about football most support team Manchester United.

What an incredible place for diving or snorkeling! We went there with our 21 month old baby girl and had awesome fun. Odyssea Dive is definitely the dive center to choose...

A very safe snorkeling reef within the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, which actually lies 2 nm offshore!!!! Years of unregulated tourism, crown-of-thorns starfish outbrakes, poaching and bleaching almost killed it, but the reef is back!!! Excellent coral growth, very healthy fish life and the park is working hard to regulate and patrol it with visible results.
Worth a visit for sure, but please don't touch/break/remove any corals!

We went diving 4 times at 2 mile reef. Massive turtles and rays, the usual colourful fish but what made it special was listening to the humpback whales singing. We went in Aug and the whales are in the area at this time, it was fab to listen to their noises under water.

Wow. What an experience. When you visit this area, rent a boat, book a tour, go on a dhow, just do whatever you can to make sure you can experience this beautiful reef. We went on a sunny day with a private boat and a skipper that helped us find our way. I have never seen so many fishes in my life except in an aquarium. I even saw an octopus. We just went snorkelling as I don't have my qualification to deep sea dive. On a good day, the water is like that of a swimming pool, totally calm. I will never ever forget it!! AMAZING!!

We hired a local boat to take us for the day, pretty basic boat with very basic equipment, but worth every minute. Don't take the suggested boat that the local Vilanculos tourist info office will suggest - properly dodgy!

We took a speed boat to the reef, the pat left from Baobab Beach Resort, first we went to the island of Bazaruto for lunch & to wait for the tide to be just right. The two mile reef is in the ocean & the trip can be rough, be sure that it is worth the trip& you will love the snorkling & diving on offer here, the worste part of the reef is leaving, best reef fish & coral outside of Australia...

A great spot to snorkel as the visibility is great with a clear vision of more that 50 mt sometimes... Occasional sightings of pelagic fish, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and the normal crowd of coral fish and crustaceans. Some times the current is quite strong but manageable.

In april 2012 we drove from Maputo to Bazaruto mainly to go snorkeling - an experience that always will be remembered.
We stayed in a nice, small hotel on the mainland as the one (ore maybe two) that are on the islands will cost you an arm and a leg. The boat trip (rib) was together with ca 6 others. It took more than one hour as I recall it. We finally reached the most fantastic place when it was low sea. We where then able to se several bright white sand"islands" in between these we plunged into the crystal-clear water. If you just lie in the sea concentrating on the corrals and anemones only one meter below it is like I imagine a very good LSD-trip would be ;-) Bright colors, the strangest shapes moving under you – mouths on plantlike creatures, stones that changed colors, fishes in every color. The temperature where fantastic, the lunch made for us on an island very nice and the discovering of a small straw hut with many balloon-fishes hanging in the trees to dry made it surreal. One young american girl on our boat was stung by a jellyfish – it was only a matter of 3-4 treads on her upper arm. She turned pale and the mark from the treads became visible very quickly as black stripes. The guy in the boat did not have any first-aid that was relevant. I suggested to wash it down with vinegar, but there was none. As she really looked like she was going ill, shaking and pale, I told her mother the best solution at hand was to wash with urin. She told her daughter who, despite pain and discomfort, totally refused to do such a thing :-P
Luckely another boat passing had vinegar and the pain was soothed.

It took a couple of hours sailing by dhow to get to the reef. The water was fairly calm though and the sun was shining. So it was a pleasant enough trip. We were dropped into the water over a series of coral 'gardens'. The clarity of the water was very good and because the water was not particularly deep we could get good fish sightings just floating on the surface of the sea. The keener ones in the group duck dived below the surface is some of the deeper areas. There was a huge variety of fish and some fairly large schools of fish. Also the coral, which is in very good condition, provided a good show of colour in its own right.
We then sailed on to one of the small islands nearby, where we clambered up a rather large sand dune, before running down the other side back to the beach and lunch.
A very enjoyable day out.

How far is it from Maputo and can you do it as a day trip?

Hi all, I am looking to stay at affordable accomodation as close as possible to Two Mile reef.
Any tips or suggestions would be most helpful. Also, I would like to know if one stays anywhere else in Mozambique, is it possible to catch a ferry or boat to this reef? Thanks in advance! Alleyah
