Although this is a lovely site, and significant for Christians, the Franiscan Friar, Fr. Sergio was not at all kind. Our group was ten minutes late of our time for Mass, and he scolded both the priest and guide. The guide happened to be a woman, a Catholic Sister, and Sergio was heard to say: "She's no guide." For a place where Mary received hospitality from Elizabeth, there was no hospitality at all from Fr. Sergio. He should be removed from this post.

This church is up a paved track from the carpark below. It is an easy trek through pleasant semi-rural scenery. The church itself is associated with Mary's visit to Elizabeth and is a colourful place with small gardens and a terrace outside. Worth visiting if you have already seen the major sites in Jerusalem.

But at the end, the view is fantastic.
The climbing is not difficult, and even a small kids could do it.

A worthwhile visit to this old church in beautiful Ein Kerem. Excellent frescoes, mosaic floors and verses of the magnificat in many languages. Enjoy.

A short walk on a hill commemorating Mary's visit to her cousin, Elizabeth. Imagine Mary was already pregnant then when she did this so it's a relatively easy trek even for the elderly and yes pregnant women. This was one of our favorite church visitations during our whole pilgrimage. We loved it so much when my wife took a photo with our co-pilgrim beside statue of both pregnant Mary and Elizabeth. A few months after, my wife was healthily pregnant (for the second time, first one was ectopic). Also hoping our co-pilgrim will be blessed, too.

Though the walk up the mountain seemed pretty rigorous for the elderly, it was worth the trek. The church is built over the site of Zachariah and Elizabeth's hillside home. This is the place where Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. There are actually two churchs on site. The lower church is more dedicated to Elizabeth and St. John the Baptist while the upper church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are beautiful frescos and mosaics in both the upper and lower church. The Magnificat is written in several languages on the wall of the courtyard. The view looking out over the valley is stunning.

This beautiful modern Catholic church, managed by the Franciscans, was designed by Antonio Barluzzi and completed in 1955. The church is built on the site of the home of Zachariah and Elizabeth. It honors Virgin Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth (the mother of Saint John the Baptist) as told in Luke’s Gospel. It’s important to note that Zachariah and Elizabeth had 2 houses in Ein Kerem (a home in the valley but also a cooler summer home on the hillside). It is the summer home that Mary visited when both women were pregnant, and the valley home where Saint John the Baptist was born. The prayer of praise and thanksgiving that Mary recited, known as the Magnificat, is inscribed on the courtyard walls in more than 40 languages. The two-tiered church has a gorgeous mosaic on the upper facade depicting Mary’s journey to Elizabeth. Inside are beautiful frescoes with scenes relevant to Mary. The lower church level includes a small chapel with a passage leading to an old well and a niche with a huge Stone of Hiding indicating the area where baby John was hidden during Herod’s massacre of infants. The church is another Barluzzi masterpiece, and well worth the effort required to walk up the hill.

It is nice and solemn with a beautifull view. However, visiting with an elderly presented some challenges as there are lots of steps to climb.

The Church is very important to Christians who come from around the world to visit and pray here and relate to events that took place in the new Testament. The Churches are magnificent and the scenery is very beautiful.
There are a number of Churches and Christian traditions and sites regarding the history of Ein Kerem which Christians consider to be a town in Judea which is mention in the New Testament.
All can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the village and view of the mountains and Valley.

While on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, our tour guide took the forty nine of us to the village of Ein Karen. One of the churches we visited in Ein Karen was the Church of the Visitation. We walked up the hill to the church. It was a beautiful church where Elizabeth lived in seclusion for five months. Be sure to visit!
