About
The First Natural Gas Lighthouse. Finished in 1829, the 40-foot tall Barcelona Lighthouse (Portland Harbor) was the very first natural gas lighthouse in the country. It was in Federal Lighthouse Service until 1859. At that time it became privately held through various owners until 2008, when New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation acquired it. Though it no longer has the original lens, nor is used for navigational purposes, it is still lit and visible today through an agreement with the Town of Westfield. The lighthouse is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The Keeper's cottage is open in a joint partnership with the Town of Westfield Visitor Center and a seasonal Wed-Sun docent with NYS Parks. The lighthouse itself is not open to public ascent due to structural issues at this time.

We were finally able to tour the welcome center and go into the lighthouse. Fritomann has been here in the past but they are only open on weekends, in high summer.
You can hang out at the Marina most every day. But in order to go into the tower, you really need to plan ahead.
From the ground, the lighthouse, truly unique, looks like a was built in the 15th century, like a Henry lV castle in England. Actually, the brochure mentions 1827, at the very beginning of lighthouse technology in America.
What a bizarre looking thing.
There have been plenty of pics taken over the years, I don't need to add mine.
You can go in and stand at the bottom of the tower and admire the rickety Wooden steps and fieldstone walls, but you can't climb up, at least not at this time. There is much work that needs to be done before the tower will be safe to climb. You should inquire as to how YOU can help accomplish this goal, if you are serious about lighthouses.
Barcelona Harbor NY really is a best kept secret on Lake Erie. But don't take Fritomann's word for it.

Be forewarned that you cannot climb to the top of this one. But if you are in the area, it is worth a stop to learn the history of this relic.

Thank you for the good rating and review. Yes, at this time, you can enter the base and look up but not ascend to the top. There are structural issues with the staircase that have been examined by specialists and we do have a plan to restore them for future public access. Hope you visit again!

Came to see the lighthouse and stayed for the view at sunset. The beach and lake were so pretty. We forgot about the lighthouse, and spent most the time taking pictures of the sunset and enjoying the relaxing feel of the water.

This lighthouse was a sweet area to stop and check out. The museum was closed for the season.
It had plenty of areas to walk around and even have a picnic if you wanted.

A very beautiful area! Unfortunately, we were there after the season so the museum was closed but we will definitely go back to see it.

An amazing up close lighthouse experience. Be sure to check out the small museum, and talk to the volunteers that staff the lighthouse on weekends

A beautiful historic lighthouse. I would have like to have peeked inside but I was happy just to see it.

We're happy you were able to stop by. Normally we have the base open to 'peek inside' Memorial Day through Labor Day. Unfortunately we were not able to open the museum in the cottage this year; we hope you were able to walk around and see the exhibits we had in the window under the covered back porch while taking in the Lake Erie views. We hope you have an opportunity to visit again when things are open.

It's a gem. Can't go in and the detached house (some sort of office or museum) was closed, so typical covid-era site - look from the outside but you can't go in. Nice little area by Lake Eire with a few things to check out. Then again not really much going on here unless you got this special feeling for lighthouses like I do. Interesting dichotomies lighthouses have: romantic but lonely, danger yet safety...

Thank you for visiting out lighthouse and providing a review. I hope you walked around the keeper's cottage as the back covered porch provides not only a spectacular view of the harbor, but also a look in - we have many of our museum displays in the windows as we were not able to open it normally with the covid issue, but wanted to be sure patrons were able to learn some things about the lighthouse. For example, the lighthouse is the very first natural gas lit lighthouse in the entire world! We hope you have the opportunity to stop in again under normal operating circumstances. Typically, in a non-covid setting, the museum and base of the lighthouse are open daily Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Even if it’s not open, it’s worth a stop to see the old photos, map and get a little history of the area.

Right by the road - easy to look at and photograph. Didn't go inside building but one of the coolest lighthouses I have seen.
