Hard to pick a favorite - the walled garden? the Temple of Love? the staircase to the river? the gatehouse plantings?
A spectacular rescue and preserve mission of one of America's most celebrated gardens.

In short; truly the most difficult place to narrow down into 1 instagram post. I had all of NYC covered in 1 post, but this was harder.
Truly the best place we visited in NY. So much more than I expected. Constantly stunning, everywhere you turn, every path you go down is just amazing. I went there without really knowing what it would be and was just completely blown away. I'm so happy places like this exist. The gardeners do an amazing job, not sure how they keep up with this place but it's phenomenal!! I will not allow anyone I know to skip this on a trip to New York.
"Awe-inspiring. Would not have thought that a garden like that would exist in Yonkers. It felt like it wasn't real." - quote by my partner (who I made come with me and is not particularly a 'gardens person').

I have lived in New York for 52 years and had never heard of this magnificent, hidden gem, until recently. This park Is absolutely breathtaking and it’s beauty literally brought me to tears.

I was staying nearby and decided to walk to the park. I was able to discover all the features in about an hour and half. The revitalization is still in progress but what has been completed is stunning and visually pleasing.

I enjoy nature!! I don’t like being emerged fully in trees because then I feel like Walter White or Daniel Day Lewis (meaning I want to hide or not be in public viewing)!! I enjoy cities and trees and plants!! I got fake plants for my dorm because I thought I wouldn’t care for a real one and it would die!! Anyway I went here with my grandma and it is very calming!! We walked around and saw the views!! We were there for 10 or 15 minutes!!

A beautiful, open garden to wander around, relax, get a breath of fresh air, and enjoy the plants and nature around you. I love coming by here after a long day and taking time to re-center.

he Untermeyer Park & Gardens is an absolute gorgeous and stunning attraction based in Yonkers, New York.
The garden was designed by architect, William W. Bosworth, and built and developed in 1916, by Samuel Untermeyer, a prominent attorney and civic leader.
Today, the garden is open to the public and hosts many cultural and social events.
In December of 2021, I brought my wife and myself to the garden to view and take pictures of the Grand Holiday Illumination, which first began in 2015, and has now become an annual holiday attraction in Yonkers, New York.
The Grand Holiday Illumination features hundreds of thousands of well decorated lights, a beautiful Christmas tree, and the playing of classic and timeless Christmas music.
In addition to the beauty that’s displayed at the Grand Holiday Illumination, my wife and I enjoy munching down on the complimentary cookies and hot delicious chocolate that is provided by the community volunteers.
During the holiday season, both my wife and I highly recommend for everyone to visit the Grand Holiday Illumination at the Untermeyer Park & Garden to explore and sightsee the amazing Christmas decorations.

Beautiful place. Very unfriendly staff. Guards are very rude and got very close to me when speaking to me.

Stunning gardens, lovely stroll, and free!
I am not even sure what else to say… this once-private property is a masterwork of garden design. The walled garden was my favorite, but the entire area is full of beauty and views that don’t stop.

The grounds, created at a time when historic art, bubbling pools and gardens wove a haven for respite, have a stunning vista of the Hudson. Decorative objects, grottos, wandering trails, and views give pause for contemplation, conversation and candid shots. You just need a love of the outdoors to appreciate. Visitors ranged in ages from infants to their great grandparents. Everyone can find fulfillment of one (or more) of the senses.
At first daunted by the descent on the regal staircase to the Hudson viewpoint realizing the return uphill, but by utilizing the trails with more gradual slopes and by taking my time, I experienced not a single pant at the end. I even descended to the lowest trail. The temple of love is heavenly and - in September- swarming with the migrating monarch butterflies.
Riding a combination of the 1 subway and the BeeLine bus 2 from Manhattan to Tudor House (last stop) was quite straightforward taking almost 2 hours. I tried to return by the 6 beeline bus and the MetroNorth from Yonkers but the bus did not arrive as scheduled. Not wanting to wait another hour, I returned the same route. Both the beeline buses are steps from the entrance. The Greystone Manor stop on the MetroNorth line was closed the day I visited- check the schedule to ensure it has re-opened if you prefer that option.
I recommend bringing a book, a snack or a drink for an excuse to spend more time soaking up the beauty and to lose oneself in the homage to serenity.

There are two small lots with a total of around 20 spaces. There is nearby street parking on North Broadway.
Is it permitted to set up an easel for painting?

Are walks in Gardens handicapped accessible? Suitable for scooter?

I took a bus of senior citizens here and some had walkers or canes and everyone was able to discover the gardens. I do not remember anywhere there were stairs except to walk up to the gazebo which you need not do (at the end of the garden area) - it was a very accessible garden and well worth the stop.

Nearby attractions include the Hudson River Museum and Planetarium including the Greystone Mansion. The Planetarium has a new show about the moon, the museum features changing exhibits, music and lectures along with its ongoing Riverama exhibit about the ecology of the Hudson River and the Mansion has period furniture, household objects and a charming doll house. Allow 2 hours to see everything for a modest adult admission of $6. A great place for families, couples, a afternoon date or an adventure with grandparents. Applebees Resturant is nearby on Executive Blvd.
Also nearby is the Lenoir Preserve, for a gentle walk through woodland and meadows. A relaxing place for birding and nature lovers. There is a small museum. Visit them online for current exhibits and woodland walks.
Further south, a 20 minute drive, is revitalized downtown Yonkers along the Huson River promenade and Van der Donck Park featuring the daylighted Saw Mill River, stunning views of the Palisades and beautiful plants and flowers. Interpretative stations along the park and river walkways explain the river ecology. Be sure to see the outdoor classroom with it beautiful tiled floor featuring indigenous wildlife. Take pictures on the arched bridge.
Walk across the street to the renovated Yonkers train station to see the architecture and walk into the adjacent park to see the Ella Fitzgerald statue.
Have the 3 course lunch special at Xavier's on Hudson on the promenade for a moderate price, or have a picnic in the park with sandwiches and drinks from The Wedge Cafe at the top of the Park on Warburton Avenue. The Pizza Place across from the Ella Fitzgerald Park has outdoor seating and colorful murals inside. Visit the 4 story state of the art Yonkers Riverfront Library across from the train station. The 4th floor art gallery is free to the public.
A walk along the promenade to the north will take you to the Yonkers canoe and kyack club and the black and white boat that transfers river pilots from their ship to the shore. Yonkers is the "parking lot" for New York Harbor and the place where river pilots exchange duty. Depending on the day, several barges and their tugs can be seen on the river waiting for their "harbor call". Walk south on the promenade to the sculpture garen, the 911 memorial, views of Manhattan and the George Washington Bridge. To the west are the majestic Palisades and the Alpine New Jersey marina. Topping the Palisades is the red and white Armstrong tower. At the top of van der Donck park is the Phillips Mansion whichs open to the public.
Including time for a leisurely lunch and pictures allow about 3 hours.
