North Carolina's third oldest town, Beaufort lies on the coast bordering the southern tip of the Outer Banks. Originally a fishing village and port of safety dating from the late 1600's, Beaufort has been visited by patriots, privateers, merchants, and skilled craftsmen who built Bahamian and West Indian style homes and public buildings. On the Beaufort Historic Site, you can take advantage of the six professionally restored buildings, tour the Old Burying Grounds, and take a tour aboard a vintage English Double Decker Bus. Beaufort, NC truly is where history meets the sea.

I visited during old homes weekend. This is when many of the older homes in the town are opened by the owners for tours. Some of the people dress in period clothes and all have intresting things to say about their homes and area. Now it does get very crowded and traffic can be a nightmare but a chance to... More

Place is small but staff is very informative. Wife and I visited and then went to cemetery which is very close by. Would recommend as part of the trip.

Great photo ops from the moment you enter the downtown Beaufort area. Visitor center staff was very helpful and engaging. Helped me make the most of short time that I had. Great walking tour for those of us who don't want to go on a 'scavenger hunt' to find sites of interest since most of what was worth seeing in... More

My husband and I had decided to visit Beaufort on a recent trip to the NC coast and we are very glad we did! Our original plan was to rent bicycles. However, when we were unable to locate the rental business we thought a visit to the Visitor Center would be a good idea in order for us to use... More

Very helpful in getting attraction recommendations and orienting to the small town. Informed us on the free parking areas as well! make sure to get a copy of the old burial ground guide from them. A small gift store is on site as well.

The visitor center itself is OK - not in itself worth the trip - but its the setting, with historical structures and the nearby burying grounds is worthwhile. A stroll along the waterfront, lots of craft shops, a couple of good restaurants all add up to a relaxing and worthy day trip.

Friendly informative staff, the double decker bus tour was informative but not for the faint of heart on a really hot day like we had.

The ladies running the visitor center are delightful. They are willing to answer any question and know all about the area. The center is easy to access and provides nice restrooms. It is also air conditioned. We took a double decker bus tour of the historic homes. I would recommend this because there are so many and so much information... More

While many people stop into the visitor center for good info, I loved the historic site on the grounds. There are houses from the 1700's, and civil war and post civil war buildings such as a real apothecary and jail. I came back more than once, it is a little gem and well worth the visit!
