About
Frisco Native American Museum houses exhibits with thousands of artifacts from Native cultures across the country and include a special gallery, dedicated to the local tribes (Hatterask, Croatoan, Roanoac) and features many items that were found locally on the Outer Banks. The museum is the life work of Carl Bornfriend. He and his wife Joyce worked together to create this special and friendly 501(c)(3) museum whose goal is to honor native people and expand communication between tribes and non-natives. Carl and Joyce both come from education backgrounds and those ideals have forged a distinctive place. Carl taught among the Delaware and Hopi, sharing his love of nature and learning with anyone who would listen. Joyce is a former teacher, principal, and school board member. Combining Carl's spontaneity and creativity with Joyce's warmth and organizational skills has produced a place of learning and respect.

Wonderful Experience! We learned so much. The man who started the museum had such passion for the preservation of Native Americans. Hard to believe it was started with no funding, it's incredibly interesting,The displays are beautiful, the artifacts are so spectacular. How could he know to save all these items.
It's not fancy which we really appreciated because you are in OBX. It shouldn't be. It has that old antique store kind of musty charm . The gift shop is fantastic, I bought a mug soap and some turquoise jewelry. My friend bought a dream catcher and a leather pouch. Great book selection...something for everyone.
And they have classes there.

Aya! Neewe (thank you) for your wonderful words and visiting us. We hope you'll come back- we will be working January to March revamping our local tribes exhibit. Maybe you can even make a class!

It's a small space, but packed with artifacts from various time periods and locales/tribes. The displays are beautifully laid out, providing small glimpses into the lives of Native American peoples spanning generations. The atmosphere fosters an air of respect, reverence, and wordless nostalgia.

Bigger than it looks from the outside and a great selection of Native American artifacts. Everything from tools and weapons to cradle boards, baskets and pottery. The beaded pieces are amazing! Hubby and I spent 2 hours taking it all in. The girl who works there was very welcoming and informative. She knew the answers to our many questions.

I saw this while looking for things to do while staying in Avon. It was a small museum but packed with so many different and interesting artifacts. It's well worth the trip. You can get through it quickly but if you want to really look at everything leave yourself an hour+. They have a small gift shop as well.

This really well done museum should get all the support you can give it. It’s informative and very well organized. In the US museums often don’t get the public funding they deserve. So we privates have to help as well as possible. It’s worth it.

Neewe! (thank you) We work hard within our budget. Mr. Bornfriend started this museum while he was working full time as a teacher and it was only open on weekends. We have expanded a great deal, and will keep pushing our boundaries. We are looking to get more digital information in the museum, and hope you will continue to visit and watch us grow. The Frisco Native American Museum has gone through a MAJOR RENOVATION as a result of the previous hurricanes.I guess they are lucky they didn't lose the whole place. The entire collection has been rearranged, all the displays have been redone. They added some fantastic new exhibits . It's incredible what's done being a non-profit foundation. The older reviews are very critical of this place and mean spirited. We enjoyed our visit so much. The displays were beautiful, it made us want to learn more about different tribes represented.
I bought a gorgeous dream catcher,a painted feather, hand made soap, some beaded bracelets and a cool mug with their logo on it from the gift shop. Our kids found some books in the Book Room and these adorable painted turtles. Unfortunately the Nature trail was closed because of this years hurricane. What a wonderful day ,we cant wait to come back next year.

Neewe! (thank you) We're so glad you enjoyed the museum! Yes, Hurricane Matthew was a trial, but we learned so much Hurricane Dorian only shut us down for a little over a week. We put our cases on wheels to facilitate quick mold/mildew prevention and cleaning. All our electrical wiring is now in the middle of the wall so it won't get flooded out. No more drywall for us, only salt treated wood. We hope you will continue to come and visit and watch us grow. We have plans to keep working on our space and hope to add more digital information to our exhibits. Barbara Miller

On a day trip to Hatteras we visited Frisco Native American Museum. It's a small museum, but admission is only $5. We really enjoyed it. A variety of items from different tribes. They have trails but we weren't able to walk them because it was shortly after hurricane Dorian.
