If you are in the Hillsborough, NC area and you love historic churches, you should take the time to stop here. It was built in 1959 next to a cemetery that dates back to the 1700s. The congregation was started in 1759 by the Anglicans. The doors have always been open when we are there. While in Hillsborough take the time to walk around the small town and soak up the history.

St Mary's Chapel is a great place to see from the road. It is on St. Mary's Road which in itself has history as there is a ghostly tale about St Mary's Road and the Chapel. Once in a while they will open the Chapel but that you have to find out when. I pass this Chapel almost every day and am in awe of the history that surrounds it.

This is likely a little known special place to visit. It has truly wonderful interior architecture and the surroundings are very rural and relaxing. I recommend stopping by. Across the street on the diagonal is a wonderful new farmer who will soon have a vegetable stand. Do stop by and visit this lovely couple.

St. Mary's Chapel is an interesting example of mid 19th century Gothic architecture. The church congregation was chartered in the late 1750s and the chapel in question was built about 100 years later in 1858-1859. The church is located about 6 miles north of Hillsborough on St. Mary's Rd, an easy and scenic drive from downtown Hillsborough. This is the companion church to St. Matthew's in downtown Hillsborough and was chartered to serve the citizens of northern Orange County. If you do tour the current St. Matthew's Church building, I highly recommend you continue north on St. Mary's Rd and tour St. Mary's Chapel as well for an interesting comparison.

This church is located away from Hills9brough out about 5 miles on St. Mary's Road. It is a couple hundred yards off of St. Mary's Road on a hill. There is no marking on the church but it matched the pictures in TripAdvisor reviews. Very pretty little church and the past reviews suggest it is open. It wasn't it was locked. It is back of a day care.

We looked for the cemetery but couldn't find it and then on our way out discovered where it was. It is on St. Mary's Road surrounded by a stone wall. We didn't have time to go back there but to access it walk down from the church through a field towards St. Mary's road to see it. Looks like an interesting cemetery. It would be nice if the previous reviewer had indicated where it was as it is not obvious. Both my daughter and I looked around the church and didn't see it as it is over 100 yards away,
