This cemetery dates back to the mid 1700s. We took a tour and were fascinated about what we learned.

Old cemeteries can tell us so much about an area and this one is no exception. Within the stacked stone walls are buried not only prominent figures, casualties of war, and also ordinary people. If you love old cemeteries, this is a must visit.

The Old Town Cemetery in Hillsborough is a fascinating slice of history. The site dates back to 1757 and has over 180 grave markers honoring some of Hillsborough's more prominent families. There are also an undetermined number of graves that are no longer marked due to the passage of time.
William Hooper, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was once buried here and a marker honoring him still remains - his remains were re-interred at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in 1894. The cemetery is located behind the Presbyterian church at the intersection of Churton St and Tryon St in downtown Hillsborough and is easily a part of any walking tour of the area.
I highly recommend you make this part of a walking tour of downtown Hillsborough.

The Old Town Cemetery is located behind Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hillsborough. I have talked with friends who have taken paper and pencil to trace the gravestones. This a shady and restful place to relax. Jane H.

The reason for the five stars is the historical significance of the cemetery. Has the grave of William Hooper signer of the Declaration of Independence. There also is a governor buried here. Many of the grave sites are hard to read and mainly in the early mid-1800's some date back to 1700's. Was established in 1757. Small cemetery with about 200 graves or so. Sort of hard to get around the rock walls but not difficult. Park on Tryon Street right off Churton to the left if you are heading north on Churton. Behind Orange Historical museum.

The Old Town Cemetery was established in 1757. It's surrounded by awesome stone walls. William Hooper (a signer of the Declaration of Independence) was buried there along with other notable people from Hillsborough. They have a sign asking you not to do headstone rubbings because it can damage the headstones.

This is a well kept cemetery full of those who helped establish the United States of America as well as this part of North Carolina.
I happened upon this cemetery by accident, and I am glad I took the time to walk through. It is not every day that one can see the grave of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and one such patriot is interred here.
