Not to be Missed

This is a great hike with incredible views! The GPS took me a few hundred feet past the parking lot which is not really marked so you have pay attention (look for the cars). I would also go early. I went on a Friday morning around 9:00 am and the parking lot was already full. When I finished my hike cars were parked along side the road for several hundred feet - its that popular.

The hike itself is relatively short (under 2 miles round trip) and moderately strenuous. The trail is well maintained but it is rocky in places (lots of stones used as steps). It was also muddy the day I went so do wear good shoes. The trail itself did not feel crowded so do not be put off by the crowded parking lot.

There are viewing spots along the way to rest and take in the scenery but the pay off is the rock outcropping that looks as if you are suspended among the clouds. This is a popular stop for pictures and for very good reason. People are very friendly and willing to take your pic (I was traveling alone).

Rough Ridge pics were the highlight of my trip and worth every effort to get there.

Great hike
Oct 2021
Great hike! Got there around 9:15 Friday and there were 1-2 parking spaces left. Read that this one was a short hike for a big payoff. Reached the peak in 30mins. It's a little muddy at the start, and a few areas near the top. Saw a guy carrying their dog so its paws wouldn't get messed up. Got tons of great pictures. It's a moderate hike. Lots of the stones are cut in to make stepping/climbing easier. I could imagine how wonderful this would be in the spring when the flowers are in bloom. After we left, we parked a little further down and got more pictures including the deep valley and viaduct. As we were leaving, there were cars parked everywhere and the lots of people on the trail.

best short hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway

One of the best things to do in western NC and it's free! It is a short hike but fairly steep. The views are spectacular!

Great views!
Jun 2021
Saw this in a book that said “One hike you MUST do” so of course we had to do it! The trail was mostly rocks and it is quite the climb but it’s worth it when you get to the very top. Part of it had boardwalks. You hike through a “tunnel” of bushes for quite a way. We lucked out and were the only ones there – it was so peaceful. So go early to beat the crowds. The parking area is small so another reason to go early in This was about a 1.5 mile hike total up and back (but websites seem to differ on the length). Whatever it is, it’s worth it!

Great hike to amazing views!!

This is a great hike right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are 2 ways to access Rough Ridge. Easiest and fastest way is from the Rough Ridge Lookout Parking area. Parking is limited, so get there early! This is a steep 1 mile climb up rock steps and roots on a very narrow trail. As you reach the top, the trail opens up a bit to a boardwalk and amazing views.

You can also access Rough Ridge via the Tanawha Trail. This route is longer (depending on where you access Tanawha Trail), but also a bit more of a gradual climb on a slightly wider trail.

busy but nice quick hike to great views

a great short hike. VERY busy! Wear a mask if going during COVID. This is not meant for people who are not sure-footed. Probably not The first outlook is really the best view, but fun to keep going to the top.
It is very narrow and was pretty muddy when we went.

What a view!

Don’t let the name fool you as I was a little apprehensive in hiking this trail. It was easier than I imagined and well marked, boardwalks in certain areas, beautiful stone steps, etc. The views were fantastic and worth the effort. Go early enough to get a parking space as it fills quickly.

Narrow, fun trail for all ages with some incredible views! Our family almost went back to do this one a second time. Highly recommend for a family hike and view stop.

The hike isn’t too difficult, and it is definitely worth the climb! The views are amazing, and there are several places to stop, rest, and enjoy the views as you hike upward.

Foggy
Sep 2019
My husband and I went here early on a Thursday morning. Finding the parking area was a bit tricky as it was so foggy that we could barely see the road, but we finally got there. We knew we wouldn’t have good views but we love to hike and we were also celebrating our anniversary. We had a great time. We thought the hike was relatively easy and liked the rocks. If we were ever in the area we would definitely do this hike again.
