I love to get out and hike and am always looking for new spots to go. I had never been here before so I decided to check it out and I was glad that I did. There are actually 2 parts to the park, the Catawba River part and the Lake James portion. I stopped off at the Catawba part... More

Lake James is everything a lake should be, big, beautiful, and fun to play on and in! The state park is one of the nicest I have ever seen....sand beach, beautiful public building with dressing rooms and bathrooms, places to eat, boats to rent and a fabulous place to swim. There are great camping areas on the water that are... More

I live five 10 minutes from this park across the lake from me. It's attractive and well maintained with walking paths, mountain biking paths and swimming area. The only shortcoming is lack of docking for boats. There are some boating campsites but not many.

Stopped in on Labor Day for a short visit, the office and gift shop appear to be new. The beach was clean and not real crowded. The restrooms were clean and the Park Ranger was very helpful. Thanks guys and Happy 100th Birthday NC State Parks.

We had visited the old Lake James beach location a number of years back and were not impressed. We decided to give it another try, not realizing they had created this new beach location at Paddy's Creek. What a pleasant surprise! We were there on a Thursday and arrived around 11:30. The beach house was clean and in good repair.... More

So I booked a camping site at the Catawba River site of the Lake James State park on Thursday July 21st through Sunday July 24. My mother and I planned on spending three nights blissfully enjoying summer lake camping. First off this state park does not allow alcohol, if you need that to have fun this is not your place,... We chose to try out the boat-in camping using our kayak. The paddle was a little confusing and a little strenuous but worth it. The campsite was beautiful and private and had a perfect beach for swimming and taking our boat in and out of the water. The campground also has a pit toilet but no running water. We had... More

We visited the park with my family interested in the water sports offered at the Paddy's Creek area. Park is very big and it was really confusing how to access to that area since it's located on a completely different entrance to the park that's far away than the one marked as Lake James State park that had absolutely nobody... We stayed for four nights at the Catawba sight. We are relatively frequent campers having frequented many state parks. Parking was ample including longer spots for a trailer or small boat. We stayed in spot 20 which gave us water views but too far to leave a boat by the water. Spots 4 thru 18 were mostly shaded with old... More

Just stopped at this state park to camp for the night and didn't knw what to expect. The entry to Paddy Creek campgrounds is certainly a long and winding drive that takes you away from the ranger office and boat launches. Once arrived, the campground layout is superb. I arrived late and usually grab a site and wait for ranger... More
