A quick stop is all you need. Not too interesting if you don't know the history of the ponies and they are not close to the front fence. Could use a information plack

Yes, there is a pen with a few ponies visible from the viewing area - nothing special - takes about 3 minutes and you can move along to do something else. Too bad they are not able to roam free throughout the island!

Stop here for 15 minutes to see some of the indigenous ponies on the island. No charge, and you can see most of the horses from a viewing stand.

It is wonderful that the NPS has taken on caring for this herd of ponies so that the public can see them and learn about them. It is a very easy stop with plenty of parking. This is a convenient way to see some of...More

So sad that these beautiful banker horses have to be penned up due to high risk of being hit by cars on Hwy 12. Good to see them healthy & well cared for. Good parking right on front the Hwy & beach access right across...More

while the intrigue of seeing the "wild ponies of Ocracoke" might sound like a great idea, do not be fooled. It is 5 horses in a pen on the side of the road. Absolutely nothing spectacular. You can save your self the time and drive...More

Read the history of the Ocracoke Ponies. They are not to ride but to serve as a historic reminder of the explorers who landed or were shipwrecked here. They are visible from the road into Ocracoke, beautiful little ponies.

The wild ponies were rounded up about 60 years ago so they could not be hit on the highways. First time we drove by, saw two ponies fairly close by. When we stopped next day (and walked out to viewing area), they were all near...More

Having been to Chincoteague, we found this rather disappointing. It's just horses in a barnyard and behind a fence. We have those all over the place at home. If you want to see wild horses, go to Chincoteague and Assateague.

Looked like horses to us. A few at the back, hard to see. Observation deck was nice if there was something to see. We stopped about 2PM Nov 8, 2017. Glad we didn't make a special trip. It was like horses in a zoo. Sad....More
