The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

Very kind and knowledgeable staff. Exhibits are well done, with animals having both indoor and outdoor spaces. Particularly enjoyed bear exhibit.

Nice variety of happy animals. You can take the train around the park or put some walking shoes on and get your steps in while looking for the animals in their nice big enclosures. Definitely go if you like Zoos!

Of course, a zoo in North Dakota doesn't seem right. Northern USA, winters etc it just doesn't fit. This is a disappointment and not worth the time. Hard to beat San Diego zoo which is what we set as the standard.

We had a great time. It was a wonderful small zoo. The animals are not crowed into cages and there is a great selection of animals to see. There are few petting animals and a few you don't often encounter at a zoo, alligators in...More

Small exhibit for the bald eagles. Fun place on a hot day. Liked the tiger exhibit and also liked the monkey exhibit.

This is a surprisingly good zoo, suitable for any age. An impressive range of animals, from many continents, from wallabes to buffalo and birds. Nice wide walkways. Limited concessions which are not excessively overpriced. Little narrated "train" rides (we did not do this), and we...More

Visited many times but I/we were not impressed with all the junk, toys, shredded paper & misc. unsightly garbage in the Macaw cages. Can you not make some wooden "toys" or something less unsightly if they need things to do?

The zoo is within about 10 minutes of the airport and a nice place to spend a few hours before returning the rental car and boarding the flight home. Most animals can tolerate both cold and hot weather so are well able to handle ND.
