A short walk out to the viewing point and you can see hundreds of puffins. Just far enough away to avoid disturbing them

We highly recommend staying in Bonavista for 2-3 days and doing multiple things. This guided hike is one of them. Jon is an absolutely amazing tour guide, and you will really enjoy being with him and learning about Newfoundland history, animals, and the plants. He teaches you about the medicinal qualities of certain plants, and you get to try some of them too! One of the cool things about doing any sort of tour in Newfoundland is people experience different things every hour of every day. Each person's experience is different. We got to see some puffins, ravens, and other birds. Jon is very good at spotting them and brings binoculars so you can see them from the cliffs. We absolutely loved this experience and highly recommend it! Some tips: wear good walking/hiking shoes. Dress comfortably, as this tour lasts for a couple hours. Go to his website and email to see if there are openings.

We thoroughly enjoyed Jon’s guided hike! He got us so close to puffins and offered his telescope & binoculars for great views & photography. His knowledge of the local flora & fauna was astounding. It’s a must do in Bonavista!

Puffins is His speciality. Without a doubt he could be called the puffin caller as your most likely to view them up close and personal with John.

My friend and I placed a call to Jon to see if he would be available to take us for a tour well after the main tourist season was over. Much to our surprise, he said he could guide us on a natural history walk and offered a discount as the puffins (often the main attraction) had left the area. Not really knowing what to expect we met Jon and headed out. We visited an extremely beautiful coastline near bonivista which crossed barren lands full of amazing autumn colors. Jon pointed out dozens of plants, explained their varied medicinal purposes and usages and of course we tasted plenty delicious berries along the way. After we reached the ocean, the stories of puffins, whales, Caplin, and bald eagles emerged and we could easily imagine the beauty when these animals are in the area between June - August. Jon gave us a history lesson in resettlement, ship wrecks, and showed us the old walking trail system used for 100s of years by locals. We highly recommend enjoying a tour with Jon. He has worked with National Geographic, taught natural history at college level and his a keen eye for seeing things us average folk just miss.... A telltale sign of a true expert. Excellent!
