It's lovely to be thinking about summer on the first day of spring. The Highland Village tells the story of Gaelic settlement in Nova Scotia. Our 11 historic buildings are staffed by costumed animators who are passionate about sharing the Gaelic culture of our ancestors. The Museum sits on a 43 acre site overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes in Iona,... More

While touring Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail, we decided to take a detour to go and visit this village. We were happy that we did. The village was very well prepared and showed great examples of homes over different periods. The view was worth the visit on its own. The people working there were great at explaining the life... Gaelic culture abounds. Takes a step back into time and shows Cape Breton Celtic life from a time by gone. Gift shop and motel and restaurant on site. Many concerts on the hill here. Highly recommend attending the Concert on the Hill in August annually held. Talent is world class all the way!

Much better than many a historical recreation the historical houses and lifestyles represented are well animated. The church alone is worth the journey

Stopped by and it was worth every penny - the best of Nova Scotia! Dressed-up interpreters with stories to tell thru the ages, with farming, animals, spinning, weaving, General Store with fiddle music, school with wool fulling table, church, blacksmith - an amazing historical presentation! Best of all - the busloads of cruise tourists came as we were leaving!!! They... More

This is a nice destination to spend a couple of hours. The buildings are laid out in a time sequence from leaving the highlands of Scotland to early 1800's. The village is set right on the coast and the views are spectacular! Enjoy anywhere from an hour or two here.

It was a great place to see and learn about the history of the Scottish people who made their new home in the New World here in Cape Breton Island. Lots of see and every building on the site is a slow journey in time of the changes with the culture and work that the Scots made for themselves in... More

Our B&B hosts recommended Iona and we were not disappointed. It is on a hill overlooking the Bras d'Or Lake so views were good even though it was a bit misty when we visited. It's a living museum going back in time from the first Scottish settlers finding the money to get to Nova Scotia and their struggles during the... More

A great museum showing how new Scottish immigrants lived when the arrived in Cape Breton. A little steep to walk in places so would not suit some people but the views are fantastic.

Thanks for visiting and taking the time to write about your experience. You are correct to point out there is a hill to climb at the beginning of the tour. However, if you ask at the entrance, you will be able to park on the top level and explore the Village from there. More
