We enjoyed the drive to get there also. Many photo ops of birds along the road to the entrance. There is a visitor center but we were there before it opened. The drive was nice and we saw birds, but the drive could have taken you to the shore a little more. The birds are hiding in the grass so driving slow is a must.
TIPS: Take your water and pack a lunch. You are in the middle of no where. Take your time. Not for small children (they would get bored)
If you liked my review, click me a thumbs up. Thanks

The Refuge has a newer Visitor Center/Headquarters as the previous Refuge headquarters having flooded. The Visitor Center does close about 4:30 (don't remember the actual hours) but the outside doors are not locked so informative brochures are available even when the Visitor Center is closed. The Refuge has an auto tour which one can drive and make stops at their own pace with a diversity of habitat. The birds are great. Also, they have a blind available (with reservations) for viewing a Shap-tailed Grouse lek in the spring. Will definitely visit again if I'm in the area.

Nice refuge and place to stretch legs and take a walk. There’s a easy trail through the refuge that showcases local botanicals & a pond. Very neat stop to break up a long drive. Takes about 1 hr to complete.
