We were staying nearby and as rail enthusiasts thought that we had to visit. £10 initially seemed steep for a return journey but as it took 25 minutes to reach just under 4 miles it makes sense. The stop at slaggyford is not open yet,...More

I'm so sorry it was too hot. I'll have a word before your next visit! Joking apart though, many thanks for the lovely review and I'm so glad you enjoyed your day with us.

Everyone was so friendly especially the signalman. Also the station staff were lovely. Food very tasty in the café and trip on train was through wonderful countryside. The only thing that could have been improved was the weather but it could have been worse.

This must be one of Heritage Railways’ best kept secrets, a delightful 2’-0” narrow gauge line tucked away high in the North Pennines. Even the drive from Cobridge along the A686 to the railway’s terminus at Alston proved to be an unforgettable experience. It is...More

My how this lovely railway has come on. Used to go in the late 80s and it's now been developed into a much longer (soon longer still) journey into the unspoiled South Tynedale valley. The station at Alston has just been redeveloped and it's lovely....More

This is a narrow gauge railway [20 inch] and usually there are a variety of interesting steam engines pulling the trains but today was a diesel which is not quite the same thing but the trip up the line is just glorious, lovely scenery. I...More

Our first visit to the South Tyndale Railway earlier in May was very enjoyable. The trip to the current end of the line and back takes about an hour and goes through some beautiful scenery. The staff in the shop, on the train and in...More

Lovely steam trip down the line and back. Well worth a visit. Lots of renovations going on so it will continue to flourish.

We have been regular visitors to the STR since around 1990, when the trains only ran as far as Gilderdale, just over a mile outside Alston. I have been delighted by the development of the line over the years. One feature I recall well was...More

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately massive drainage issues and such things as the location of the gas main caused most of the changes as did the construction of the South Tyne Trail pathway as where you previously walked was the old trackbed. Once the...More

A pleasant journey on the railway on a gorgeous spring day, disappointed that the train was diesel hauled not steam, and that the extension hasn't been opened yet, but none the less a nice trip on an attractive line.More
