With its headquarters in the fine old Peak District market town of Wirksworth, the Ecclesboume Valley line, at nine miles, is Derbyshire's longest heritage railway. The line runs through some of the most pleasant scenery in the White Peak, from its joint station with the main line at Duffield to its northern terminus at Ravenstor, close to the High Peak Trail and the National Stone Centre.

The line provides services mainly operated by heritage diesel railcars, with four trains a day on summer weekends and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the high summer. The timetable is designed to connect with East Midlands Trains' services to and from Derby and Nottingham. Visitors may wish to take advantage of a 'zigzag choo choo' all Day Rover Ticket issued by the railway and Trent Barton providing an excellent opportunity for discount travel through the beautiful derbyshire countryside by bus and rail. Steam hauled services are also operated at peak periods, please call us to check what is running.

If you would prefer to see the line from the Driver's cab or realise a childhood dream by taking the controls of one of our heritage steam or diesel locomotives then you can book that day to remember direct on our website. We offer a range of experiences to suit any occasion and budget.

Visited here today (Sunday 23rd April) with my partner and 11year old son. I used a family voucher that I had purchased from Groupon for a day on the Duffield to Wirksworth route. We found a free car park near the church in Duffield which was just a short walk away from the station. The platform was very authentic with... More

Visited on a bank holiday weekend so the railway was probably slightly busier than usual and had some extras laid on - steam train trips up the short incline, children's entertainer, and the option to walk around the engine sheds. Most rides on their main stretch of line are on preserved diesel trains and not steam, a fact which is... More

Stayed in Whirksworth with my family & saw the train ride on Groupon. Family voucher cost me £19 for up to a family of 5! Bargain....... If u pay direct, then this tour would have been £35 ish (plus) for a family of 4. So the staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the ticket collector! Had quite a sense... More

This train trip was a birthday present. We travelled from Wirksworth to Duffield where we had lunch at Godfries. Train journey took us back years, reminded us of train journeys from our childhood. The other passengers were a mixture of old and young all enjoyed the ride. Will be back for a steam engine ride when we can. Well done... More

Visited on Saturday over Easter they had a small magic show on which the children enjoyed I thought it was going to be bigger but it was ok, a bit disappointed with the model train display I thought that also would be bigger, the train ride itself lasts for about 40 mins one way, the scenery is nice and there... Dear Neil D, Thank you for submitting such a comprehensive review of our railway. We believe our ticket prices represent excellent value for money and running a heritage railway is a very expensive business! Once again, thank you for your kind comments and I hope your son enjoyed his visit to the driver's cab. With best wishes, Tom Tait More

Last visited this when it only went a short way out of Wirksworth station and now it runs down the delightful Ecclesbourne valley to Duffield. Mostly DMU's but their was a saddle tank steam engine running up the steep incline to Ravenstor when we visited on Easter Monday. You can usually share the cab with the driver on the DMU... More

Went on Good Friday and although the special events for Easter were not starting until the Saturday, we had a lovely multi-trip journey on the diesels. Paid the £2 extra to travel up 'BR's steepest incline by steam' and enjoyed a bacon buttie in the Pullman Buffet car. The volunteer staff were so helpful and friendly. Eric is very knowledgeable... Our first visit here and would definitely come back. We joined at Wirksworth so we could be sure of catching the first steam train of the day up to Ravenstor. I believe this leg may be seasonal. It's quite a step incline for a locomotive and lasts about 5 minutes or so. From here you can walk to the national... More

We chose to start at Duffield from the quaint little station which has it's own car park. The journey is a delightful scenic and leisurely 9 mile trip along the Ecclesbourne valley. The majority of the services are in classic diesel multiple units, with limited steam services - see the timetable for details. We then had time for a leisurely... More

Whilst I may be slightly biased, having visited many times before, I wanted to review, so thought I would. The staff are very friendly, and the journey isn't too long. At Wirksworth, there is the option of eating light meals at the station, or heading into the town for food. At Duffield, there isn't the option of eating anything other... More
