Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens. The Gardens and Grounds of Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of medieval England and the romance of renaissance Europe. Your experience begins as you make your way through the grounds and the castle breaks into view. The castle gardens and grounds are home to a staggering variety of flora and fauna with wild orchids, formal rose gardens, Canada geese and resident peacock all adding to the charm of such an individual location. Various events take place throughout the year including theatre productions, operatic performances and most famously the Medieval Festival. Castle tours are provided but because the castle operates as an International Study Centre we advise visitors to call in advance to avoid disappointment.

The grounds are fabulous. The old chestnut trees are wonderful. The whole area is very photogenic. Visited the grounds in the morning then the nearby Science Centre in the afternoon felt the best way to visit both with a 9 year old.

I am sure they would have been lovely in the spring or summer but we are not gardeners and only really paid the entrance fee to tale look at the fantastic castle. There is only one tour a day for castle and it wasn't at the time we were there.

We went only in the grounds as you are aloud to take your dog, the gardens are so good, lots of photo opportunities for the castle and grounds. We even sat outside and had a cream tea in October, lovely cafe that do drinks and food. You pay more to go in the castle. Nice lawns to take your own... More

A lovely location. Arrived early morning and headed to the small cafe. Entry fee was £4.95 each as concessions. The cafe didn't look great from outside however once we entered it was beautiful. The drinks and cakes were well presented and it was a friendly atmosphere. As the castle tour was at 1300 hrs we missed it and had a... More

The gardens are a nice walk around. Took the dog too which was nice. Unfortunately got there early and not enough to do for 3 hours until the castle tour started

This beautiful castle is a great place to visit, with a tea room and lovely gardens to walk around. Really stunning architecture and a choice of gardens to enjoy. Nice area for a picnic too and plenty of parking

We visited here when on holiday in East Sussex. Came across it when driving around the area & seeing a "brown" tourist sign. We had our dog with us so could not go into the castle, but £6 entry fee into the grounds was an absolute bargain. We spent 3hrs walking round the most peaceful, beautiful gardens. The woodland walk was... More

Thank you for your wonderful review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to us along with your canine companion! We are working on the signage around the grounds to improve way finding as you can get a bit lost with all the paths. More

I put business as the type of visit which brought me to Herstmonceaux Castle, here in after referred to as the castle. Sorry if I misspelled it. I am in fact a student here and so will be living in the residence hall on the grounds and attending school in the castle itself. I may be a little biased towards... More
