Located in a quiet courtyard off the main road, this is a lovely small museum that has preserved the 5000 year old history of this Roman town very well. It is run by some lovely chaos who are passionate and knowledgeable. Good presentation of artefacts and history. There are some great historic coins, utensils, pottery from an era long gone... More

Towcester has played a pivotal role in UK history as a Roman garrison, possibly close to the site of Boudicca's defeat, the site of a Saxon victory over the Danes, fought over ground in the Civil War between the Royalists in Oxford and the Parliamentarians in Northampton and having its own Great Fire. The main museum is all arranged on... More

Towcester (pronounced toaster) is a town on the the old Roman Watling Street, now the A 5 but the history goes back to the iron age and even earlier. While there are not a lot of artefacts there is a good story to tell. The museum is small but well laid out and the staff are very helpful to direct... More

Must admit as a resident of Towcester I was not really looking forward to the visit to the Museum. I know it has taken a long time for the Museum to be opened and a lot of hard work has gone into it. Towcester is not well known but if you are looking for somewhere to go and see all... More

If I go to a small town museum my heart usually sinks when I am confronted with cases full of fossils and pictures of a primeval swamp. This is not the case here as Towcester Museum cuts straight to the chase and begins with a display showing, complete with artefacts, what is known about the first inhabitants of the area.... More

I really enjoyed my trip to the Towcester Museum, its easy to find being situated just off Watling Street, although small it is packed with informative and interesting historical facts, exhibits, photographs, and video displays from the Towcester area and beyond from Roman times to the present day, I found the staff welcoming and they were very helpful in giving... This is an inspiring place to visit with so much local history revealing how the area has been the location for many armed conflicts over the centuries. The volunteer staff are wonderful and there are excellent eating houses close by.

This is only a small museum, but it is beautifully laid out and really well staffed by people interested in and knowledgeable about their town and its history. They are really keen to help people to understand the meanings behind the different exhibits, some of which are static and some of which are interactive. We were particularly impressed that a...
