The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep ravines and picuresque waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. This famous railway winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of tropical North Queensland

My kids love the train ride. We did our Kuranda day tour with Scenic Railway up and Skyrail back. If you are a bit afraid of heights, it may work out better Skyrail up and Railyway back.

The train journey is enjoyable with fantastic views along the way. The carriages are old so don't expect the comfort you find in today's trains but that is the point, you are experiencing history. The windows are open so you get good photos. You can get the train back, bus back or use the sky rail. An expensive day out... More

Having travelled up to Kuranda by Skyrail we came down by the senic railway. Very interesting commentary and good fun. Lovely old coaches and we'll worth the slow hot trip. Certainly got the feel of the old days. Terminal station also worth looking at. Good transfer service back to the Skyrail where we had keft our car. Excellent day out... More

This trip is a gentle uphill climb to Kuranda, taking in the scenery (and history of the building of the railway) as you go. 15 tunnels and 55 bridges later, having passed through some wonderful scenery, you arrive in Kuranda. The engines are colourfully decorated in (mainly) blue and yellow colours of Buda Dji, the carpet snake - said to... More

Our 2 hour ride from Kuranda down to Freshwater Station near Cairns was quite enjoyable. Before boarding, we explored the old train station with its small cafe and gift shop. We were on the last train that day so it was fairly crowded but the nice staff was quite helpful in relocating us from our cramped middle seats into another... More

Not as good as the Skyrail. Our carriage was extremely crowded while the next carriage was pretty much empty. Not sure how the seating program worked but it was very badly designed. Gets very tight with 4 people on the same bench.

Hi James, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us - we recognise the vintage style of the train, including its size, is not everyone's cup of tea. All the same, we do hope you enjoyed the lush surrounds of the Heritage-listed rainforest and the fascinating history of the railway. We hope you enjoyed the rest... More

An early breakfast and the walk to Cairns station and the mountain train into the hills to the village of Kuranda. The journey took two hours as the narrow gauge diesel trundled slowly up through the high rain forest. The carriages were open and the smells of the tropical rain forest drifted in on the soft warm breeze, it sounds... More
