Description:

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to...

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is dedicated to 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The site houses their 25-acre wooded estate, known as Spiegel Grove; their 31-room Victorian mansion; the presidential library; a museum that was completely renovated in 2016; the tomb; and a mile of paved walking trails.

There are fees to tour the museum and the home. Use of the presidential library, which has a massive genealogy and local history collections, is free.

The first floor and and part of the second floor were restored in 2012 to look as it did when Rutherford and Lucy lived there. Nearly all of the furniture, paintings and artifacts in the home belonged to and were used by the couple and their family.

The museum was renovated in early 2016 and includes interactive exhibits that tell the story of Rutherford and Lucy, the issues they faced and what they thought about those issues. Sit at a replica of the Resolute Desk - the original was given to President Hayes and still sits in the Oval Office of the White House - try on a Civil War soldier's haversack and more.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America's first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. The facility is celebrating its centennial in 2016.

The site is open seven days a week most of the year. From January through March, it is closed on Mondays.

It is also closed on Christmas, New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter and Thanksgiving. Hours on federal holidays are noon to 5 p.m.

This is a great place to visit. The home is very nice and includes original items. Per our tour guide, this home was occupied until 1965 by a Hayes family member and they didn't get rid of anything. The museum includes a lot of neat memorabilia. It isn't very large, but that is ok. I wish we build build like... More

Our nation's first Presidential Museum/Library! Plenty to see of the man himself in the museum - including his collection of Abe Lincoln's artifacts and a wall containing a letter from every president of the United States. The adjoining house is a treat due to all of the original artifacts and history behind items. Well worth a trip - you'll need... More

The grounds are charming with many trees and a beautiful layout. You will learn of details once your tour the Presidential home of the people who lived in that home. You can actually step back in time and envision them living there. You will see the master suite where the President's wife passed on. They had a very loving relationship... More

One of Fremont's best sites to visit. Spiegel Grove was Hayes' home before and after his Presidential term. The home has been redecorated to impeccable period furniture, wallpaper, home decorations. You are immersed in the 1870's. The grounds are covered with many mature trees, numerous trees have specific histories as noted on placards near/on the trees. Great place to visit on... More

The staff at the Rutherford B. Hayes Center put on an excellent detailed guide of the President's home while providing great details about the home, his life, and his family. The library has a lot of documentary and positions of the former President. This is a must visit especially if you have children and you're trying to teach them about... More

With the current remodeling of this place, it was very exciting to see all the new exhibits. The family loved looking into the past life of a President. The Hayes home and grave site was very interesting also. The paths around the yard are easy to navigate.

If you find yourself in Fremont, Ohio, and enjoy history, you don't want to miss this! I rode along to Fremont with my husband who was attending another function in town. I looked on the internet for something to do and found this. I thought, what the heck, at least it's something to do. Well, what I found was pure... More
