Bad experience with Gruve 3
Jun 2021
Gruve 3 disappointed us a lot holding back money without providing any service. We got the booking terms after booking that clearly say the amount is refundable at 95% if cancelled in time. We wanted to support this company, so instead of cancelling with shifted the reservation. As again we were not allowed to travel to Norway because of Covid we had to cancel. At that point Gruve 3 told us that now they are not anymore ready to refund any money basing it to something written on their site, but not communicated to us and which is also not part of the terms we got at the time of booking. Are we supposed to compare the booking terms with other information on their website? In addition Gruve 3 didn't reply back for months and ignored 7 emails. Bad service on the whole line. Forget this company and go for something else. A side note: We booked similar activities in Svalbard and had no issues at all with refunds! The only companies playing these dirty games are Gruve 3 and Henningsen Transport & Guiding.

We went on this guided tour with a guide called Camilla. She did an amazing job! She is so knowledgeable and told us stories on how this mine was operated. It is totally worth the 3 hours!

Greta Site, excellent guide.

The trip into this now abandoned coal mine was really great. We were picked up from the hotel by a guide named Camilla. She did a great job, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. To see this mine is gives one an insight how demanding this work was. The coal excavation was done manually, by hand with some minor help of machines.
We did the tour in Norwegian, which my wife and I understand very well. The guide spoke without an accent, she spoke slow and clear, it was easy to follow her explanations.

The trip to the Gruve 3 became an interesting and educational trip, mostly because of Wolfgang, a knowledgeful and nice guide with the touch of a little extra. Thank you for the experience.

Historylesson
Jul 2020
After our 2nd visit to Svalbard, the tour in Gruve3 with Camilla stands out as a highlight. We got an authentically and well narrated story of the history of this mine, and Svalbard mining history combined with an awesome experience of the actual mine. The highlight being standing in total darkness and silence for a few minutes deep underground. Thank you very much!

Past, present and future of coalmining
Feb 2020
The Guide gives you a good overview about the story of coalmining in the past century. Crawl into the cave of the black gold and listen to stories about coal, workers and the changing time of industrial and ecologic thinking

More than just a mine
Jan 2020
Visited the mine as part of the organised tour and it was one of the best surprises during my stay on Svalbard. To start with, it wasn't just a visit to the mine.

We got a proper introduction of the history (which is quite interesting), got some ideas about the miner's life and technology (may sound dull for some, but I promise you will enjoy it).

The place has a hint of post-apocalyptic feel as the mining practically stopped in the middle of the day and left as-is, giving a better glimpse into the life in the mine, only the miners are missing. The old seed vault and the Arctic World Archive are further bonuses.

If you want, you get the chance to crawl into a section of an actual coal seam. You should only do it if you have no issues crawling into narrow places, but if it's ok for you, it's something you would not want to miss. (Be prepared to get some coal dust and dirt. You will be literally laying on top of coal.) In the section allowed to visitors, the height is ranging between about 70cm and 50cm.

Probably the best surprise was our guide, Hild, who is knowledgable, funny and witty. @Hild: Thank you for making our stay so much better! :)

Be prepared that this is an arctic mine, and the seed vault is here for a reason. The mine is freezing. Walls where a lot of people move around are covered with ice.

Went with Ragnhild - Great guide!
Jan 2020
Had the luck of having Ragnhild as the guide on our tour! She was knowledgable and fun at the same time. She told us the mining history of Svalbard with a twinkle of her eye. Excellent! Would recommend anyone going to Longyearbyen and Svalbard going on this tour

Fascinating look into Svalbard's history
Jan 2020
We were fortunate enough to be treated to a "private" tour being the only two people booked in that day. Our guide, Camilla, was friendly and engaging and really brought the reality of working in the mine and living in Svalbard to life. We were able to see machinery, tools and clothing used by workers and got a first had experience of the conditions they worked in.

We were provided with a hard hat and head torch, and given the option to wear an overall - recommended as there is coal dust everywhere down there!

A highlight was being given the opportunity to "mine" our own piece of coal to take as a souvenir.

Unique attraction

Really exiting attraction. I was not expecting to see the many interesting modern applications they use the mines for today, for example safe data storage and beer storage for the local brewery. Also a unique history regarding the lives of the coal miners. Recommend!
