This is a must when visiting Longyearbyen, gives you a good overview of the exiting history, with hunting, mining and tourism.

Great size and very informative

We visited this on a very windy and cold day, but it is much more than just a museum to visit if the weather is poor. The museum does a great job of explaining the history of the islands and its unique wildlife, and also has enough exhibits aimed at smaller kids. The museum is a good size, you could race through it in 15 mintues but can easily spend a couple of hours there.

Must visit when in Svalbard
Jan 2021
It´s not big, but we spent close to 2 hours inside to be able to see and understand everything. Brought a 10 year old. He had the time of his life and really enjoyed the stay at the musem.

Svalbard museum is a small but very informative place. You can learn a lot about the geology of the island, the animal types and histocal facts of Svalbard archipelago. It has a nice and welcoming environment and if you want to take it easy for a couple of hours you can easily do it there

Excellent museum!

Lost track of time, but I think we spent around 2 hours there. History, geography, culture - it covers everything and the price wasn’t too bad (100kr per person). Were going to visit the North Pole Expedition Museum the next day, but that museum has closed until Feb 2021. Definitely a MUST when in Longyearbyen!

Fun way to pass the time

Museum was well put together, focused and covered several key themes of the area. Most elaborations are in Norwegian but the English summaries still explain the key points well. The layout is very aesthetic and looks intriguing

Educational and interesting , but avoid if there are tourists who think it is allowed to speak loudly
Aug 2020
We spent two hours with interesting and well-organized tour. However, one hour of the tour was "polluted" with high and noisy German and Italian speaking tourists who took no consideration to the other visitors. Personnel could have been more helpful.

Nice museum
Jul 2020 • Couples
The museum was nice and there was plenty to look at. It was better if you could read Norwegian as then you got more information but the English summaries were nice and concise.
