Historic church in peaceful location
Sep 2019
This church is kept open by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who are a store of fascinating information. It is worth arranging in advance to view inside the church to inspect the wall paintings and remarkable pews. The churchyard is surprisingly extensive and contains the grave of Field Marshal Lord Alanbrooke.

Tending my Fathers grave on Fathers Day

Always lovely to walk through the church yard. Had to mention a yew tree that needed trimming. Beautiful ground but need a lot of attention.

Last resting place of Victorian Author Charles Kingsley, St Mary's boast an enormous giant red wood sequoia in the middle of its cemetery..Dated above its front door 1714, the church unfortunately was locked on my visit, but just to wander around the outside was fulfilling. The Vicarage next door was home to Kingsley, who entertained queen Victoria there on her frequent visits..

My most favourite church

St Mary's Church has always fascinated my, we try to go to all the open days when possible. We visit my Fathers grave every week but we are saddened by the number of gravestones that are covered in ivy & brambles. We would love to be able to clean them

Lovely old church. Only open for a few hours at weekends. Beautiful interior and history. Also worth visiting the graveyard.

Travel in time and experience the years gone by...

What a charming place....the feel and the context...where the present meets the pasts and it seems as if you can feel the history of the place taking you back to those times...nearly 900 years ago...even the graveyard is so quite and nice, small and makes you reflect about life in general...do walk in the steps of the past lives and enjoy the spiritual beautiful ambience that this venue offers both from the external and internal views...

A really charming old church with beautiful grounds around it
May 2016
This church is open on Summer Sundays from 2.30 to 4.30 but can be viewed at other times by calling the Hartley Wintney parish office. The building is nearly 899 years old and has interesting wall paintings. It is the original parish church. There is a notice on the front of the church giving telephone numbers for Friends of St Mary's who can open up the church and give you more detail about it at other times

Attend a wedding at this venue. A beautiful old church set in a small garden within 100 yards of a De Vere Hotel.

A perfect 13th century gem!
May 2013 • Friends
This was a fabulous find - with wonderful wall paintings, original box pews, simple tiled floor, and fresh flowers installed around the inside. We were lucky to arrive just in time for the regular scheduled opening (I forgot to check before we left), and chatted with the guides on duty who were really helpful and enthusiastic about this place.
The setting of the church, being in well cared for grounds, with mature trees and lots of flowers around all added to its charm.
We will be back for the flower festival!
Its useful to know that its just a few minutes from the gardens of West Green - where you can have cream teas, and a longer walk around lovely gardens or just enjoy the shop and garden centre.
