About
Hever Castle was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the intriguing second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I. The castle is a romantic double moated 13th-century castle which houses historic 16th-century portraits, paintings, furniture, tapestries and treasures. Comprehensive information on the history of Hever Castle can be found in the guide book and audio tours are available from the Hever Shop, Visitor Centre or castle entrance. Visitors can explore the magnificent gardens for all seasons which include Italian, Rose and Tudor gardens, topiary, yew maze and splashing water maze, or take a stroll around the informal areas of Sunday Walk and Anne Boleyn's Walk. Hever hosts a number of special events throughout the season including gardening events with the head gardener and his team. Family fun includes jousting tournaments each summer, one of our most popular events.

Lovely Day
May 2021 • Family
We spent a lovely day here on Bank Holiday Monday. The tulips were beautiful and our six-year old grandson was so excited to photograph them. There was an excellent choice of hot food on offer to warm us up and the children were thrilled that the water maze had reopened. A big thank you to all the staff and volunteers for looking after everyone so well.

Beautiful Castle & Gardens
Apr 2021 • Family
Probably the best castle in England. Hever Castle is a delightful venue for the whole family. The walk around the lake is scenic and awesome. Children of all ages love the thrills at the Water Maze and the Italian Astor gardens are so pretty.

Tulip Festival - What Tulip Festival
Apr 2021
We went as two families to see the "Tulip Festival" at Hever Castle, as advertised in the RHS magazine, expecting to see displays that at least resembled the pictures in the magazine. What a disappointment! Yes, there were a few tulips on display but many/most of them did not have any means of identification. Compared with Pashley Manor, this could be described as a Rip-off. At least the children thoroughly enjoyed the Water Maze, so the day was not a complete write-off.

Poor Tulip display
Apr 2021
Visited for the Tulip Festival. Very disappointed! Really very few beds with displays although there were a couple . Hardly an event. The garden had swathes of daffodils but they were largely over. The garden is not one for all seasons and there was very little else to see. There were no maps available in order to find your way around the garden so it was very difficult to progress in any sort of logical way leading to lots of toing and froing and asking staff for assistance as to what was on the site. Consequently felt that compared to other gardens was certainly not value for money.

Poor
Apr 2021
Never got to explore, trying to pay for parking downloading apps et-al, come on cashless payment via a card surely is what's required in 2021? Also let's face it the parking prices are far too high - very poor indeed.

We are unsure what attraction you were visiting on this occasion, but it seems that it was not Hever Castle. Our car parking is free and there is no app for booking tickets to the Gardens. We can only assume that you’re review is for another business and would encourage you to raise your concerns with them directly.

Awful and unfair playground system - don’t go.
Apr 2021
Due to covid the 2 playgrounds are being run on 30 minute slots - when a bell rings everyone leaves and the next lot of people go in. Well supposedly.

It doesn’t work and completely ruined our day. There was one girl trying to manage 2 queues so she had no sight of the vast number of children entering the younger kids playground only to jump over into the bigger. I think she was turning a blind eye because she couldn’t face arguing with people which made for a terribly unfair (and pretty horrid) experience. She was too young to be dealing with all of this to be honest. It is not fair to put her in a situation where she has to deal with parents arguing back with her on a continual basis because of how badly run it was.

My toddler and I queued for 25 mins for the smaller playground. In that time I counted well over 30 people just cut in front of us and go straight in without queueing. Then when the bell did ring - countless children just ran in front of us (no parents) meaning we didn’t get allowed in to the next slot because it was ‘full’. Even though all of these kids just ran straight through into the bigger kids area. Toddler desperately upset after such a long wait and no playground at the end of it all.

Completely ruined our day and all of the children and parents not following the rules left a really bad taste in my mouth. There needs to be someone watching the entrance to the big playground, someone watching the entrance to the small and someone checking people don’t jump over.

Or more bad reviews will follow - trust me!

There is no point having a system in place if you cannot enforce it.

Unfortunately I have tickets for next week and so have to return. Hopefully things will be better organised and it won’t be so unfair and miserable.

I was sorry to hear that you had difficulty entering the playground. The system we have in place has been operating since we reopened the playgrounds in July 2020 and we work hard as a team to ensure that it's well organised and fair. Playground sessions last for 30 minutes and are managed on a fixed maximum capacity, with time on either side for clearing and cleaning the areas. Staff are positioned in the centre of the two queues, or in the playground itself and at peak times - such as this bank holiday weekend - we have had three team members working together to ensure the efficacy of our processes. Once full capacity is reached, the queues are closed until the following session. Although climbing over the barriered and locked gate between the two playgrounds puts an individual’s safety at risk, this has no bearing on capacity. Indeed, it is disappointing to hear this is how visitors are behaving - we have not experienced this in the past. With regards to queue management, there are times where one individual will queue for a family, and as such when a session is about to be admitted children may join who had not previously been visible. Whilst we discourage this as it can lead to discontent in other visitors, we attempt to actively manage where possible through communicating wait times to those further down in the queue. Indeed, when we are at capacity the staff inform the waiting visitors of the next available session, advising that they are more than welcome to stay in the queue or come back at a later time throughout the day Our team have worked within these COVID Secure procedures for almost a year and are able to answer any queries a visitor might have. They are more than happy to help, and I do hope that they were courteous and communicative with you when you raised your concerns with them at the time of your experience. Woeful ticket system for annual members
Feb 2021
Tried to book tickets as annual members (after paying the inflation busting price increase) only to find no availability.

Upon checking the day tickets availability (that non members pay for) for the same date, there are hundreds of tickets available. What is the point in having an annual ticket when Hever limit the amount available to annual members who in essence pay up front for the same service/access?

I appreciate they need funding and am happy to support but this is simply out of order. Save your money and invest in other worthy causes that treat annual members with courtesy.

Hever - Try being honest with your customers by explaining how you limit numbers and how you also exclude annual members from being able to book tickets behind 'day visitors' or simply lower the fee back down to take into account the limited availability you now offer.

The solution to this???? Well it looks like I’ll have to book lots of dates I may wish to visit and simply not turn up when it’s not convenient for me.

Thank you for taking time to feedback on your experience of our booking system. In order to better manage our ticketing for 2021 we are trialling some processes that have been adopted by other similar attractions. We have split our booking page into two – one for those who need to purchase a ticket, and the other for those with existing tickets requiring an arrival time only, such as Annual Memberships. Ticket availability is based on the average numbers booked in previous years. The February Half Term proved to be particularly popular for Annual Memberships, which was not anticipated, and the team on site rectified this as quickly as possible. Moving forwards, we will be monitoring demand more frequently and making adjustments as necessary so that annual members are not disadvantaged.

Christmas lights
Dec 2020 • Couples
Easy to book online. Sad because of Covid and the area moving into tier 3 inside castle tour was cancelled. We received an email and a prompt refund. The evening was still very enjoyable, lots of lights and plenty of places to buy food and drinks. The light displays were really fabulous. There were 1 way signs in place, but not enough at parts, as it was confusing and people walking the wrong way. The shop was open as well and 2 metre distancing marked out. The food was good, a little but expensive but tasty!

Great place to wander but expensive
Dec 2020
At this winter time of the year we're all seeking things to do during Tier 4 lockdown, so a late December visit to Hever seemed like a good idea. And it was! The cafes were open serving reasonably priced takeaway food such as pizzas, spicy sausage rolls, coffee and takeaway sandwiches. The nice thing is there are lots of benches and picnic tables where you can sit outside and eat the food. The gardens are very extensive. We had a muddy walk around the Lake which took about an hour and was very pleasant despite grey clouds and cold temperatures! Well done Hever for staying open during Covid Tier 4 restrictions. But it is expensive! We paid £14.00 per person just to go in the grounds and our RHS membership did not give us a discount because it was during the school holidays. The same is also true at weekends. In honesty, £14.00 to wander around gardens when there isn't much to see is rather steep! And if the Castle were open you would pay even more. Lower prices and the same environment would be appreciated
