Enjoyable
Nov 2020 • Couples
A very pleasant route which runs between the outskirts of Whitstable & Canterbury.
I've only done it by bike and it took about an hour for a round trip.Lots of opportunities for nature watching and suitable for all ages with gentle slopes. No facilities.

Good walk or cycle
May 2020
Good cycle link with Canterbury but we've only done the Whitstable end, walking and by bicycle, It rather dies out near the north end diverting to roads near the station due to a missing bridge over Teynham Rd to the last section to the harbour. Nice well surfaced track with trees both sides leading past St Saviours Church Graveyard and the Church St playing fields to the bridge under the (old) Thanet Way A2990. It takes in a short bit of South St then off again into the fields down to and and over the new Thanet Way A299, then up into Clowes Woods and on the Blean. Some parts are a little steep for bikes if not fit! Some parts tarmac surface some stone, but generally well maintained.

Impossible to find
Jan 2020
Once on this trail it is lovely although can be a bit busy, but finding it from Canterbury (and to a lesser extent Whitstable) s nigh on impossible. Canterbury clearly doesn’t want people referring to it as the Crab & Winkle Way given the only sign is at the station. After that as a cyclist you need to follow national cycle route 1. As a pedestrian, just hope you find a local who can direct you.
Is there some colonial/empire issue which the Labour council find offensive and therefore have decided should be removed from the heritage of Canterbury? Poor! This route is advertised in any post on things to do in Canterbury so make it easier for people to find it.

Challenging at times but worth the ride
Sep 2019 • Couples
The route is fairly straightforward and well signposted, unless you are trying to start your ride from Canterbury West station in which it is very poorly signposted! We got lost!
The route is a mixture of tarmac, concrete, loose stones and gravel keeping it interesting. You ride through tree lined paths, narrow paths, wife open paths, a couple of fruit farms and on some quiet residential roads for short periods.

A little boring!
Aug 2019
This is probably great if you cycle but rather boring walking. It is well sign-posted but not much to see.

Nice gentle bike ride
Aug 2019
Cycled as beginners (children 8 and 11). There are a couple of steep parts as you leave Canterbury which our younger child had to get off and push up, but otherwise it’s very gentle. More downhill towards the sea of course. It took us about 90 minutes of very leisurely cycling with a few breaks. You can hire bikes from Canterbury Cycle Hire (including tandems) at either end and drop off after a one-way or return trip.

Crab and winkle way
Aug 2019 • Family
We did the cycle ride to Canterbury and back with our teenage children.
We hired the bikes in a lovely little shop in Whitstable.
It was quite hilly in parts but nothing too challenging, we managed to arrive within the hour.

great walk
Jul 2019
We walked in the Whitstable-to-Canterbury direction. Be sure to stick to the path: about 2 miles in we somehow left it and only found it again by retracing our steps.
Very good walk, nice little church at Blean.
We spent a while in Canterbury, but we decided to take the bus back to Whitstable (where our car was parked).
There was some traffic, but the ride took less than a half hour and cost £4.90 ahead. I think it was bus route 4.
Very enjoyable few hours

Lovely walk
Aug 2019 • Friends
Me and my sister were staying in Canterbury and did this 8 mile walk to Whitstable. As other travellers have said the start is very confusing. Our advice is go through the centre of town past Cafe de Amis, up the hill, past the University on the right and just after a pelican crossing opposite Kent College turn right into a lane.
We walked around Canterbury with lots of signs pointing out the crab and winkle way route but none seemed to get you to the start.
Once on, it was lovely, very peaceful. We stopped at Blean church which is worth a visit.
We loved Whitstable. We enjoyed the afternoon looking in the independent shops and listening to Trad Jazz on the seafront with a glass of wine.
We got the bus back to Canterbury.
A great day!
