Behind the unobtrusive facade of Millgate House at the bottom of Richmond's Georgian Market Square lies one of the most suprising gardens in the North of England. The garden won first prize out of 3200 entries in the R H S National Garden Competition and is now a Royal Horticultural Society's "Recommended Garden". It is described in the Good Gardens Guide as "a gem""a delightful garden...skilful underplanting...never feels contrived...just natural and generous...it is a wonderful education in the handling of a small space." The garden has been featured in magazines all over the world.A recent article in the Sunday Times said..."the most densely planted garden I have ever seen." The praise is fulsome...don't miss this garden whilst in Richmond. Many return again and again at different seasons. Open Daily 10 00 am til 5 00pm April til Oct Entrance £2 00

This is a lovely place to visit with stunning views across the River Swale. There is no set admission price, but if you're honest, there is a box where you can make a donation as you enter the gardens.

Glad you enjoyed it so early in the year... The garden is not officially open to the public until April 1st.(BB guests have access to the garden all the year round) It is then open daily 10 til 5 ... There is a fixed admissions charge of £2.50. There is also a Garden Guide booklet for £1 00. R H... More

It is possible to visit this walled garden without staying at Millgate House. There is a little door next to the main entrance that leads round the side of the house to the garden at the back, and an honest box for donations. I am not a gardener at all, but recognise the imagination and sheer hard work which has... More

Thanks for your kind comments are a very challenging time of the year for the garden. Apart from guests staying with us the garden is closed to the public until April 1st 2017 when we re open on a daily basis. The door at the side is actually for private use only. More

It's always tricky visiting gardens in late September, it takes a lot of work to keep it looking good late into the season. We thought that it looked wonderful, with a super atmosphere and feeling. The alley way - a very poor description of it - was absolutely super, a lesson in how to turn a path / alley into... More

What a very encouraging review.... and from an N G S garden owner too! We like to think that one contributing factor to Millgate House being outstanding is the added bonus of the garden which guests can take full advantage of whilst staying. It is a marvellous plus to be able to wander round the garden in the early morning... More

Even if you're not interested in gardening you should see this amazing oasis in the behind a townhouse in the middle of Richmond. It won A best guarded in Britain award a few years ago and you will see why. The garden is brilliant and the succession planting keeps it fresh all year long. A total joy to wander around.

We stayed at the Millgate House for a few nights and explored the garden one morning. Wonderful English Gardens with alcoves to sit and contemplate. You can see the work on this garden, when you look over the fence at the others. Appreciate the English Garden, which while it takes great work, makes it look to simple and natural --... More

I'm not a gardener at all but even I could appreciate the sheer volume and quality of the planting. If you know your stuff, this place must be a treasure trove - and if you don't, well, it's simply beautiful to behold.

Second visit to this beautiful garden and it's a joy to wander round, with a great variety of plants, colour, foliage. Easy to see why it is award winning and highly respected by well-known horticulturists.
