My three children and I went on a history tour which we greatly enjoyed. As an amateur thespian this is a place I wouldn’t have missed for the world. It’s wonderful and there’s so much history here. At £5 per person it’s an absolute bargain. Well done.

Absolutely wonderful personal tour by Claire at this theatrical gem! Uk's oldest working Georgian theatre. Stunning in its simplistic renovation. Fascinating to see behind the scenes and in the dressing rooms under the stage. 2 open fires as the actors worked in "rep" living, cooking and eating in the theatre before moving on to the next theatre after 60 days! Well worth a visit, and can't wait to revisit when its back open for performances x…

We were unaware that this place even existed but saw it right next door to our hotel (The Fleece Hotel - excellent) setting off to find somewhere to eat. What a find. It is up there with other wonderful small theatres such as the Theatre Royal in Hobart, Australia (1830s) and Teatro Donnafugata in Ragusa, Sicily. This is earlier and simpler and a central part of the fascinating story about theatre in the north of England. Both the guide and the booklet are first class, as is the small museum.…
